The 166th WICKHAM FREIGHT LINES / MAYDAN LIVESTOCK TRANSPORT WARWICK CUP gave us a story weโll be telling for a long time.
We woke to rain, but there was confidence in the ground beneath our feet. Our track team works tirelessly to keep our racing surface safe and race ready, and yesterdayโs Soft 5 was a reminder of just how far Warwick has come. There was a time when a little rain could spell the end of a race day here. Yesterday, the crowd arrived determined to make a day of it and make a day of it they did.
Locals, visitors, big groups and familiar faces filled the grounds. By Race 3, the rain had stopped. By Race 4, the sunshine had joined the party. โ๏ธ Then came a Cup finish worthy of the occasion.
Capital Asset, prepared by Sam Strazzieri and ridden by apprentice Jess Emmerson, claimed the Warwick Cup by just 0.01 lengths over The Catch. Behind that win is a lovely family story. After a lifetime in the floor-covering industry, Sam is enjoying his next chapter preparing a small team, now just one horse, with Capital Asset raced alongside family members Jason, Anthony, Dylan and Nicolas Strazzieri. A horse found for sale online, purchased for around $20,000, and now a Warwick Cup winner. Thatโs the sort of story country racing gives us. And the celebrations extended to the Calcutta: BBT purchased Capital Asset for $1,100 and collected the first-place pool payout of $9,515.63! ๐
Away from the winning post, the Warwick Hotel & The Strand Fashions on the Field was a spectacle of its own. Record entries in Best Dressed Lady and Millinery. Custom creations, gorgeous patterns and carefully chosen details. Contestants travelling far and wide to compete for a $4,000 pool of cash and prizes.
Our first Picklebet Punters Club? WOW. ๐ฅ Five hours of food, drinks and trackside atmosphere made for a huge debut. The enthusiasm from the people inside has us thinking this could become a Cup Day favourite.
As the sun set over Picklebet Allman Park, our Kick for Cash contestants gave the crowd another reason to cheer. The $10,000 remained unclaimed, but it certainly wasnโt for lack of trying! Then came the infamous Pickle Races. A little mud, a little sliding and a whole lot of laughter. If you stayed for those, you know exactly why theyโve earned their reputation. ๐๐ฅ
Andrew Kucks carried us into the evening, with the crowd dancing, singing and squeezing every last moment out of a spectacular day.
To our incredible CEO and committee, track team, staff and volunteers, thank you for the countless hours behind every moment people enjoyed yesterday.
To Wickham Freight Lines, Maydan Livestock Transport, Picklebet, Kidszone Australia, Ranbuild Warwick, Globe Accounting, Gross Wholesale Meats, Brownlie Concretors, The Clarke Family, Warwick Hotel & The Strand, thank you for backing country racing.
To the trainers, owners and jockeys who brought the racing to Warwick, and every patron who bought a ticket, brought their friends and cheered from the sidelines, you made Cup Day what it was.
166 editions, and still giving Warwick something to come together for.
