A bit of Yamaha touring history in the Firestorm workshop today.
This 2002 Yamaha FJR1300 is in for a pretty comprehensive once-over, and there's quite a list to work through!

We're giving it a full service, including engine and final drive oils, replacing the air filter, checking the brakes and adjusting cable free play where required.

It's also getting attention to the steering head bearings, new tyres and fork seals.

The FJR1300 first appeared in 2001 and quickly earned a reputation as a capable long-distance sports tourer. With its 1298cc inline-four engine, shaft drive and comfortable touring setup, it was built to cover serious distances without giving up too much of its sporting character.

One of the nice things about this particular bike is how original it looks. No major modifications, just a fairly standard example of Yamaha's big touring machine.

And unlike a chain-driven bike, there's no chain and sprocket maintenance to worry about. The shaft-drive system has its own servicing requirements, including the final drive oil.

A fair bit of work ahead, but that's what a thorough service is all about. Making sure the whole bike is ready for plenty more kilometres.

Whether you’re freshening up a well-used dirt bike or getting stuck into a full engine rebuild, start with your bike details and see what’s available.

When was the last time you had a proper look at your motorcycle's sprockets?

It's easy to concentrate on keeping the chain clean and adjusted, but the sprockets deserve just as much attention.

One of the telltale signs of wear is when the teeth start developing a hooked or shark-fin shape. You might also notice unusually pointed teeth, uneven wear or damage.

And don't forget the front sprocket. It's often tucked away behind a cover, so it's easy to overlook.

Something worth remembering is that your chain and sprockets wear together. Fitting a brand-new chain to badly worn sprockets can shorten the life of your new chain, and the reverse is true too.

We've put together a practical guide covering how to inspect your sprockets, when to replace them, the differences between steel, alloy and Stealth-style sprockets, and what's involved in changing them.

Useful information whether you're maintaining a dirt bike, adventure bike or road bike.

Sometimes it's the smallest bikes that bring back the biggest memories. This little Yamaha PW50 has come into the Firestorm workshop for a service.

First introduced in 1981, the PW50 has been helping kids learn to ride for more than four decades. It's one of those bikes that just about every dirt bike family knows.

With its 49cc two-stroke engine, automatic transmission and shaft drive, Yamaha designed the PW50 to make those first riding experiences as simple as possible. There's even an adjustable throttle limiter so parents can control how much power their young rider has available.

And despite all the changes in motocross bikes over the years, the basic PW50 formula has remained remarkably similar.

A little bike with a pretty big place in motorcycling history.

Good to see another one being looked after and ready for more adventures.

A familiar little workhorse in the Firestorm workshop today! This Honda NBC110 Super Cub postie bike has come in with a pretty gnarly engine noise, and our initial suspicion is that it could be clutch-related. We'll need to investigate further before we know for sure.

There's a bit of history behind these bikes.

The NBC110 was introduced to Australia's postal fleet in 2013, replacing the much-loved CT110. It brought fuel injection and a 108cc four-stroke engine to a job that involves an awful lot of stopping, starting and low-speed riding.

One of the clever features is its semi-automatic transmission. You still change gears with your foot, but there's no hand-operated clutch lever, making it particularly handy for delivery work.

And here's something impressive: the wider Honda Super Cub family dates back to 1958 and had passed 100 million units produced worldwide by 2017!

Not bad for a motorcycle originally designed to provide simple, affordable transport.

Ever tried changing your own dirt bike tyres? It's one of those jobs that looks pretty straightforward until you're wrestling with a stubborn tyre bead, fighting with the rim lock or accidentally pinching the inner tube.

There are a few tricks that make the job much easier.

Keeping the opposite side of the tyre bead down in the rim's centre channel is one of the big ones. It gives you more room to work and means you're not fighting the tyre quite so much.

And here's a tip from Ash in our workshop: always have a spare inner tube ready before you start. Even experienced mechanics can occasionally pinch one during installation!

We've recently updated our step-by-step dirt bike tyre changing guide, covering the tools you'll need, removing the old tyre, fitting the replacement and those final checks before heading out for a ride.

Whether you're learning to do it yourself or just want to understand the process, it's worth a read.

A four-stroke that's becoming harder to start, losing compression or constantly needing its valve clearances adjusted might be telling you something.

On high-performance dirt bike engines, worn valves and valve seats are often behind these symptoms.

As the valves and seats wear, the valves can sit progressively deeper in the head, reducing clearance and eventually affecting how well they seal.

But there's more to rebuilding a cylinder head than simply fitting a new set of valves.

We've updated our guide to explain what needs checking, from valve guides and seats through to springs, cam timing and valve clearances.

Ash has also reviewed the technical information to make sure it's useful for riders tackling their own maintenance.

Worth a read if you're planning a top-end rebuild or just want to understand what's happening inside your four-stroke.

A good reminder of why it’s worth checking your motorcycle tyres regularly.

These photos show what can happen when tyre wear progresses beyond the tread and into the reinforcing layers underneath.

By this stage, the tyre is no longer safe to ride on. Its structural integrity may be compromised, increasing the risk of tyre failure.

One thing worth keeping an eye on is wear through the centre of the tyre. Riders who spend a lot of time travelling in a straight line can develop a flattened centre section, even when there’s still visible tread towards the shoulders.

And don’t wait until the tread disappears completely. Motorcycle tyres have tread wear indicators to help you identify when they’re approaching their replacement limit.

A quick inspection before heading out can make all the difference.
