Don’t skip the turbo at service time.
This is what came out of a yacht’s main engine this week. That turbine wheel is buried under carbon — the edge of the vanes barely visible, the whole assembly seized solid.
And it wasn’t caused by hard running. It’s the opposite.
Marine diesels are built to work. They want load and heat. But a lot of boats spend their lives idling out of the marina, trolling at 1200 RPM, or sitting on the genset at a fraction of its rating — all in the name of saving fuel. The result is exhaust gas temps that never get high enough to burn off soot. Carbon accumulates on the turbine and in the exhaust housing, the vanes stick, and eventually you’re looking at lag, black smoke, or a complete turbo failure.
Same story feeds wet stacking, bore glazing and coked injectors. It’s all one problem: an engine that’s never allowed to do a day’s work.
What actually helps:
• Run the engines up under proper load regularly — a sustained WOT(wide open throttle)-adjacent run does more good than a season of idling
• Don’t leave the genset loafing at 15% output for weeks
• Stay on top of oil grade and change intervals; coked oil accelerates everything
• Have the turbo inspected as part of the annual service, not after it starts screaming
• Watch your EGTs (exhaust gas temp)— a creeping trend is your early warning
