While that's an easy fix, one area that is often overlooked is the clutch...

Yes, it will tow 3.5 tonnes, but not every road is flat. Add in dirt, dust and extreme road temps, and the question should be – will it tow and cop abuse all day?

Clutch tech has come a long way. Just because it's "heavy-duty" doesn't mean it should feel like you're on the leg press machine at Planet Fitness. There are options nowadays that increase clamping pressure whilst still delivering a light pedal feel.

The 3.2 is an incredible engine if you get ahead of its flaws. These vehicles not only have huge potential, but they also came straight from the showroom floor as 3.5-tonne towing beasts. While you will hear tales of owner misfortune, they can be avoided altogether.

If you are looking to push the vehicle or put it to hard work, we suggest:

-A hard-pipe kit in place of the cheap factory rubber intercooler hoses.
-A fuel filter upgrade.
-A replacement factory EGR cooler (or a block/delete where legally permissible).
-Ensuring your mechanic knows to prime the oil pump post-change (to avoid that infamous no-lubrication trap!).

It's no secret a lot of manufacturers undertune their vehicles, some more than others...
In the grand scheme of things, a quality exhaust is a cheap and easy way to increase turbo spool, throttle response, and low-end torque (pre-DPF 😉), whilst lowering gas temps in strained conditions.

With a common rail system, you will get better performance, improved economy, and a better life for your turbo.

There are a ton of options out there, but we personally love the work put out by WA firm MANTA Performance. Their build process, product, and warranty are unmatched, with options levelling from cat-back to full open systems for full obnoxiousness.

2007 - Hearts were broken when the 4.2 turbo ceased production.
2010 - People started to warm to the V8, and the 4.2 is selling at premium prices.
2016 - The DPF was introduced.
2022 - Pre-2016 V8s are selling at a premium.
2025 - The 4-cyl Land Cruisers lands, any V8 is selling at a premium – the cycle repeats.

If you own a V8, be friends with a mechanic who uses the right oil and understands the DPF and EGR to ensure you have it for life. Break the cycle of disappointment.

Something we love to see at the shop: a 6.6L turbo diesel V8.

While we just had this one in for a service, the potential of these is mind-boggling. Although the driving experience is great off the showroom floor, there are some minor changes you can do to improve the performance and longevity of the vehicle.

The stock intake is decent, but an aftermarket kit can increase airflow by 50 to 60%, helping the turbo spool faster and lowering exhaust gas temperatures (EGTs). Also, the 10-speed Allison is great, but a custom TCU (Transmission Control Unit) tune can sharpen the shifts, especially if you are towing a heavy caravan or boat. Pair this with an upgraded throttle controller and this thing will feel 500kg lighter off the line.

In terms of ownership, ensuring the right oils are used and care is taken to keep the EGR, exhaust, and intake systems clean will go a long way toward ensuring this beast lasts a lifetime. Additionally, fitting a secondary fuel filter is a smart insurance policy for these engines, it provides an extra layer of protection against fuel contamination, which is vital for maintaining the longevity of the high-pressure fuel system.

It's like it shouldn't exist if it doesn't tow 3.5 tonnes.

Ten years ago, there were very few options available that could do it; now, it’s become the minimum standard. Manuals were also an option ten years ago. Despite once being stigmatized, autos have come a long way, and a lot of owners now couldn't imagine it any other way.

We think they are great too, although we really cannot expect them to put up with our conditions, especially if towing or regular off-road punishment is a part of your agenda. A transmission cooler can drop operating temperatures by up to 20 degrees, effectively doubling the life of your transmission fluid.
