Spring's here, and across Queensland that means one thing for truck owners: the caravans and boats are coming out of storage, and the adventures are being planned!

Before you load up and head off, it's worth getting ahead of the things winter quietly wore down.

What we recommend checking before your next trip:
✔ Tyres — tread, pressure, and condition after months of cold-morning driving
✔ Brakes — pad wear and fluid condition, especially if you've been towing
✔ Cooling system — coolant condition and hose integrity before it's under real load again
✔ Suspension and steering — winter potholes take a toll, and towing exposes it fast

A pre-trip check takes an hour. A breakdown on the highway with a van on the back will take a lot more than that!

A generic OBD scanner will read a fault code on any car. It won't tell you what's actually happening inside a modern Ram, Duramax or Powerstroke aftertreatment system.

That's the gap most workshops run into with American diesels… the software stops short of the depth these platforms actually need.

We've invested in manufacturer-level diagnostic software for Ford, Chevrolet, GMC and Ram specifically, because a fault code is only the starting point. Live data like actual sensor readings, actuator tests, system behaviour under load, is where the real diagnosis happens.

It's the difference between replacing parts on a guess and knowing exactly what's failed before you spend a cent.

If you've had a fault "fixed" more than once without it actually going away, that's usually why.

There's nothing better than hearing that a customer drives away feeling confident. Not just in their vehicle, but in the service they've received.

For us, it's never just about just completing a service. It's about taking the time to explain what we've done, answer your questions, and make sure you understand exactly what's happening with your vehicle.

Thank you for trusting us with your RAM 2500 and for taking the time to leave such a thoughtful review, Casey. We truly appreciate your support and look forward to seeing you again for your next service!

At MS Mechanical we don't believe in guessing, we believe in testing.

In this video, Michael takes you through the diagnostic process for a 4R100 transmission solenoid pack, carefully bench testing each circuit, recording the results and comparing every reading against manufacturer specifications.

By following a systematic process, we can determine whether the fault lies with the solenoid pack itself, deeper within the transmission, or if further diagnosis is required.

It's all part of delivering accurate repairs, avoiding unnecessary part replacements, and giving our customers confidence in the work we do.

Most people think about their cooling system in the middle of summer, when it's already under stress. We'd rather you think about it now.

Late winter is actually the best time to get ahead of it. The engine's not under thermal load, so a proper inspection tells you something useful, instead of guessing at what's failing under a hot bonnet on the side of the highway in January.

What we check:
✔ Coolant condition — not just level, but whether it's still doing its job chemically
✔ Radiator and hose condition — perishing rubber shows up as cracking before it shows up as a leak
✔ Water pump and fan clutch operation
✔ Thermostat function — a stuck-open or stuck-closed thermostat both cause real problems
✔ DEF and DPF system interaction — coolant temp affects how these systems behave too

A cooling system failure on an American diesel isn't a minor inconvenience. It's the kind of thing that turns into a very expensive tow truck bill if it happens 40km out of town, towing a van, in January.

Get ahead of it now.

We get asked sometimes why we chose to specialise in American trucks.

The answer: because American diesels deserve a mechanic who's spent real time on that specific platform, not one having a go with a generic scan tool and a bit of luck.

Every mechanic in our workshop has been trained specifically on Ford, Chevrolet, GMC and Ram diesel platforms. These guys have genuinely complex engines, and half-knowledge on a diesel aftertreatment system can cost owners real money.

Michael built the business on that principle from day one, treat every truck like it's your own, and never stop at the first answer that seems to fit.

It's a slower way to build a workshop. But it's the reason trucks keep finding their way to us from Brisbane, Rocky, and everywhere in between.

Diesel Exhaust Fluid doesn't get talked about much, until it starts costing you power.

If you're running a modern Ram, Duramax or Powerstroke with an SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) system, DEF quality and system health matter more than most owners realise.

What can go wrong:

→ Contaminated or poor-quality DEF — causes crystallisation and blocks injector lines

→ Faulty DEF dosing pump or injector — throws NOx sensor codes and can force a power derate

→ Low DEF level ignored too long — most systems will limit performance or lock out entirely as a safety measure

→ NOx sensor drift — gives false readings that trigger unnecessary derates or mask a real fault

The frustrating part is these faults often get misread as "engine problems" when the real issue is downstream in the aftertreatment system.

If your truck's gone into limp mode, thrown a DEF-related code, or you're just not sure your fluid is up to standard — that's a diagnostic we run all the time.

Winter's easing off, but that doesn't mean the workshop gets quieter.

If anything, the last few weeks of the cooler months are when we see the most trucks. Not because winter causes new problems, but because it's when the ones that have been building quietly in the background finally show themselves.

Here's what tends to surface in early August:

→ Glow plugs that were borderline all winter, now failing outright

→ Injector seals that were weeping slightly, now leaking properly

→ DPF regen cycles that struggled through short, cold trips, now overdue for attention

→ Batteries that just scraped through the cold mornings, now on their last legs

None of these are new faults. They're old ones that finally ran out of road.

If your truck's felt "not quite right" through winter and you've been putting it off, now's the time to take action.

Not all oil filters are created equal. 👀

In this video, Michael compares Duramax oil filters with what we're now using in the workshop—the MicroPure Extreme Performance Engine Oil Filter.

The difference? Improved filtration that helps keep harmful particles out of your engine, protecting critical components like your bearings and supporting long-term engine performance.

It's a small upgrade that can make a big difference.

If you've spent winter towing a van up and down the Bruce or the New England, your truck's about to get a well-earned break, which means it’s time to see how it’s travelled.

Sustained towing puts real strain on transmission fluid, brakes, cooling systems and turbos. These things don't fail dramatically, they just wear quietly until they don't.

If you're also thinking about upgrading before your next big trip — more towing capacity, better throttle response, stronger airflow — we're proud to be official installation partners for both MPI Performance and Touring Solutions Australia. That means genuine parts, proper install advice, and setups actually proven under Aussie conditions.

No guesswork, no upsell you don't need, just what your truck actually needs for the driving you actually do.
