"Just delete the DPF, mate."

If you own an American diesel, you've probably heard it. And with diesel where it is right now, the pitch is a tempting one: fewer regens, more power, better economy.

Here's what doesn't get said as often, for anyone running a road-registered vehicle in Australia:
→ Removing or disabling a DPF on a road-registered vehicle isn't legal
→ It can mean fines, defect notices, and a very awkward conversation with your insurer if something goes wrong
→ It doesn't fix why the DPF was struggling in the first place

That last one matters most. A DPF that keeps blocking is usually a symptom, not the cause. Short trips, a tired DOC, an injector that's over-fuelling, a faulty sensor. Whatever started it is still there after the filter's gone.

We find the cause and fix it properly. That's what advanced diagnostics is for.

Five years ago, seeing a Ram or a Silverado on a Toowoomba street was a novelty. Now they're everywhere.

The American truck market in Australia has grown fast. The service side hasn't kept pace. Most mainstream workshops still aren't set up for them with wrong diagnostic software, no parts connections, limited hands-on experience with the platform.

We watched that gap grow, and it's exactly why MS Mechanical shifted to make American diesel trucks our main focus. These are genuinely well-engineered, capable machines. They deserve mechanics who actually understand them, not ones having a guess.

Turns out he was close, but not quite right, and that's exactly the kind of job we love. The team checked his theory first, ruled it out, then kept digging until they found the actual issue.

We’re approaching storm season. One minute it's a clear afternoon. The next there's water across the road and someone's thinking, "it's probably not that deep." We've seen how that one ends. Last spring, a Land Cruiser took an accidental swim and came to us needing a whole new engine.

Here's why. A diesel can't compress water. If it gets sucked in through the intake, the engine can lock up or bend internals in a heartbeat.

If your truck's been through deep water:
→ If it stalls, don't restart it. Cranking a water-locked engine is how a repair becomes a rebuild
→ Get it towed, not driven
→ Tell us exactly what happened, it helps us find the damage faster

And even if it kept running, water can hide in places you can't see:

✔ Engine oil and transmission fluid — milky means water is in there
✔ Diff and transmission breathers
✔ Air box and intake
✔ Fuel water separator
✔ Electrical connectors and modules

The best fix is turning around. The second best is getting it checked before the damage spreads.

Diesel prices have been climbing again, and if you're towing, you'll feel every kilometre of it. We can't change the price of fuel. But we can make sure every litre you buy is actually doing its job.

Before your next trip, try this: know your truck's normal. Reset the trip computer at your next fill and keep an eye on your fuel use over the next few tanks. Once you know your baseline, you'll notice the moment it drifts.

When economy slips and nothing about how you drive has changed, it's usually one of these:

→ A boost leak — lost boost means the engine makes up the difference with more fuel
→ Injectors that aren't spraying the way they should
→ A DPF that's regenerating too often, or struggling to
→ A restricted air intake

None of them are dramatic, which is exactly why they get lived with. But at today's prices, "that's just how it drives now" is an expensive habit.

If your truck's been pulling to one side, chewing through tyres unevenly, or just doesn't feel as planted as it used to, now's a good time to get it looked at.

Potholes and road damage that don't always announce themselves straight away and an alignment or suspension component can be knocked out weeks before you notice it in how the truck drives.

What we check:
✔ Wheel alignment - even small deviations accelerate tyre wear fast
✔ Ball joints, tie rods and control arm bushes
✔ Shock and strut condition - especially on trucks doing regular tow work
✔ Steering feel and play at the wheel

Left alone, these issues don't just wear tyres. They affect how the truck handles under load and in an emergency stop.

Every service is worth ten minutes on the hoist to rule it out.

Nobody thinks about their air con until the first really hot day of the year, and by then, everyone's likely booked out.

Spring is actually the smart time to get it checked, before the workshop calendar fills up with summer breakdowns.

What we test:
✔ Refrigerant level and system pressure
✔ Compressor operation under load
✔ Cabin air filter — a blocked filter kills airflow before the system even gets a chance
✔ Condenser condition — road debris and insects can build up over winter and restrict airflow

An air con system that's low on refrigerant doesn't fail all at once. It just gets a little weaker every year until the day you actually need it and it's not there.

Every mechanic on our floor has been trained specifically on American diesel platforms, not handed a generic scan tool and told to have a go.

That's a deliberate choice, and it costs us in time and training investment every single year. New model years land, calibrations change, and aftertreatment systems get more sophisticated. If we're not keeping pace, we're not doing our job properly.

It's part of why trucks keep finding their way to us from Brisbane, Rocky, and everywhere in between. Not because we're the closest workshop, but because the depth of knowledge here is hard to find anywhere else in the state.
