SINCE 1966 - SUBARU BOXER ENGINE
Underneath the bonnet of the 2026 Subaru Outback and Outback Wilderness models, you will find a hidden easter egg etching that resembles a Subaru Boxer Engine. On the right side, this Boxer Engine symbol states "Since 1966" in English and on the left side, you will notice the same etching stating "since 1966" in Japanese.
Did you know? Subaru launched its very first flat, horizontally opposed engine design in the Subaru back in May 1966 with the release of the Subaru 1000.
How it works: Most car engines are the same, but a Subaru Boxer engine is different. A boxer engine is a type of engine with cylinders arranged on either side of the crankshaft, facing each other. Its name comes from the way the engine's pistons move horizontally in a punch-counterpunch rhythm, resembling sparring boxers in a ring.
Benefit for the customer: When it comes to the driving experience, a boxer engine offers a distinct feel on the road. The intentionally low placement of a boxer engine on top of a vehicle’s chassis and even weight distribution creates a lower centre of gravity compared to other engine types. This enhances a vehicle’s stability, responsiveness, and grip. Drivers may feel the power of the boxer engine as they negotiate sharp turns, conquer challenging terrain, or face inclement weather.
Today, our Petrol and Hybrid vehicles feature the latest generation of Boxer Engines. The launch of the 2026 Subaru Outback marks 60 years of Subaru's signature horizontally opposed boxer engine; therefore, Subaru designers have included this small, but powerful symbol to highlight the decades of engineering behind our vehicles today.
