Its been a busy couple of weeks and my Magneto bench is running hot. I am slack and don't get on here and post that often (need more hours in the day) We just enjoyed the big Australia day meet here in Sydney at the W.S.I.D and it was a great crowd on the friday night, personally I think it's on of the biggest crowds I had seen for years. But there was still plenty of space to fit more people and what a night, Sam wasn't there but definitely will not be forgotten , but even with his loss on every ones mind it was a great meet, Friday was hot but as the sun disappeared the Top Fuel came out and the Numbers were impressive right from The Reads first run of the night with a 3.81 @ 319 MPH to the final run of the night with side by side 325 MPH and flames the whole way,
Saturday had a few niggles and I have got the Ignition Systems for a test and tidy up of 4 out of the 5 teams..
Shane sent me in a Mag and the ignition boards from one of the Lamattina cars, the good news is I found some faults and have sorted them out so hopefully they have a great meet over in W.A this weekend..

Here we go Take 2. I stripped Jon's Magneto and found 3 out of 4 bearings were notch, the 4th barely spun at all. Also the lower drive shift was the old original design and around 12 years old. It was hammered out of shape. So I have given it the full overhaul with all new bearings and a new lower drive shift with a new rhynite (genuine MSD) square bush, this is there stop metal on metal and reduce vibration and noise. Just like everything on a race car these MSD Magnetos need regular servicing. Even a once a year check up.

Jon just sent me his 44 amp mag for a service. Just in time by the sound of those bearings... still makes plenty of spark though. Tough as guts these magnetos

Just buzzing up one of Lamatina's 44s after a service.

I don't get on here as much as I should, but here is one that might interest a few racers out there. I have been repairing these MSD timing lights for around 18 years, their biggest problem is the battery packs, Answer this question, what is the battery voltage in your Cars, 12 Volt and higher when running, so these timing lights are all designed to run on equivalent voltages, MSD actually sell another nearly identical Timing light that has leads to connect onto the vehicles battery and power it, yet in this version they give you 6 piddly AAA Batteries, they are 1.5V each, pardon my math's but
6 x 1.5 = 9V, so even with brand new batteries this timing light is barely functioning, and as the voltage decreases current draw increases, so the flatter the batteries, the quicker they die!!!!
One other constant problem is when these sit for ages the batteries start to leak corrosive acids and not only destroy the terminals and wiring of the battery box itself but as you can see in the photo the main P.C.B is eaten and virtually destroyed.
So I put on my thinking cap and worked out what I feel is a better solution, BIGGER BATTERIES AND MORE VOLTAGE (this is where Tim Allen on Tooltime would grunt - More Power) Doing some extensive modifications I have managed to fit 3 x 18650 Rechargeable high current output Lithium ion batteries, these are 3.7 Volts, and fully charged apparently can be 4.2...., this is at least 11.1 Volts up to 12.6 Volts, so at least from fully charged they have a lot more headroom to operate, they can be 25% discharged and have more voltage than the originals. Just to help out I have also fitted a battery charge indicator on the side, you just press the button and it indicates the battery voltage in %, the batteries still need to be removed for charging but that's pretty easy, just remove 2 screws at the rear and slide out the battery box.

Craig from Race Car Engineering sent me down the points box out of one of their customers Speedway cars as it was dead. I stripped it down and cleaned it out as it was full of mud. I then replaced the fets and a couple of other components and applied new heat transfer paste and reassembled it and spun it up on my test bench, it put out a real strong spark right through to 12,0000 RPM where I let it sit on for 10 minutes, not many engines will ever get up there but it does sound mighty fine.

just finished overhauling two MSD 44 Amp magnetos for a top fuel car. It went bang at the last meeting- Nitro is really impressive, but it is no ones friend when it goes wrong. This is a quick buzz up to 10,000 RPM on my load bench with the spark jumping 40mm.

Emilio is hoping to get his car out for some good testing this weekend. he went to fire it up on Monday and it was dead, after chasing around they worked out the points box had died. So They rushed it to me and I did an overnight on it and am giving it back to them today. at the same time they got me to extend the harness on their change over switch, this switch allows them to start on the magnetic pickup in the generator and then flick of a switch they are running on the crank trigger. Hopefully now the weather holds out...

it's not often I get time to post, just too busy all round. but here is a quick one.
John was having trouble working out the rev limiter on his customers box, so he sent it up for me to check out.
Quick strip and repair, all back together and ready to race again.

Emilio sent me in a pair of MSD 44 Amp Magnetos to check out, he also wanted me to convert the red one to the large cap and to adjust the rotor phasing to suit. This I did , but I took the red cap base off the black mag and fitted it to the red magneto on top of the new Top section that I had fitted to the mag, and supplied a whole new black cap assy. This now gives them a complete Red mag and a complete Black mag, small details but it definitely makes for a tidier look
