Four jerries on the roof look like extra range. Here's the math:

• A full 20L diesel Jerry is around 20kg. Four is close to 80kg + sitting up high • That weight comes straight off your GVM and lifts your centre of gravity • A long-range tank carries the same fuel low and central, and stays put through corners • Empty jerries mean dead weight and fumes home. A tank's range is there the whole trip • Judge it on usable range: where the weight sits and how it handles loaded

Bigger tyres make the engine work outside its sweet spot, so it feels gutless. Three ways to deal with it, and they're not equal:

• Re-gear: the actual fix. Resets the diff ratio so the engine spins right for the bigger tyre, and brings your speedo back to true • retGearboxune: next best if a regear isn't in the budget. Holds lower gears longer, but the diff ratio is still wrong • Engine tune: last. Adds a bit of power but doesn't touch the gearing • The order: regear if you can, then gearbox, then tune
