$15K on a brand new 250 Prado. Here's exactly how we'd spend it. 👇

And more importantly — the order we'd do it in.

1️⃣ Suspension — $4-5K The 250 sits soft from factory. A proper upgrade matched to how you load it makes more difference than anything else on this list. Better ride, better handling, level under load.

2️⃣ Bull bar & winch — $4-5K Pick a bar that suits how you use the truck. If you're touring out west, animal strikes are real. Add a winch and self recovery is sorted at the same time.

3️⃣ Tyres & wheels — $3K The right all terrain on a 17 or 18 inch wheel will transform how the 250 drives and what it can actually do off road.

4️⃣ Recovery gear & UHF — $1-2K Straps, shackles, Maxxtrax, UHF in the cab. None of it's flashy. But the day you need it, you really need it.

$15K. Done in that order. That's a capable, sorted Prado.

Last week we covered weight and GVM. This week — how to keep it good on the road, not just in the bush.

Here's the honest breakdown:

🏔️ Vic High Country, Simpson Desert, serious off road — pre-rego GVM upgrade, bigger lift, 35 inch tyres. That's the setup. But you will sacrifice fuel economy, tight car parks and daily drivability. Eyes open.

🛻 Weekends away, dirt roads, fire trails, coastal campsites — 2 inch lift on 33s is more than enough. Drives well on the road, fits in a car park, still gets you where you want to go.

There's no wrong answer. It just depends on what you actually do with the car.

Most people don't need 35s. And if you're honest about where you're going, a 2 inch lift on 33s will surprise you.

💰 $5K — All terrain tyres, UHF radio, driving lights. Better grip, better comms, better visibility. Simple upgrades that actually change your weekends.
💰 $10K — Proper suspension matched to how you load, all terrains and underbody protection. This is the foundation. Most owners would be set here for years.
💰 $20K — Suspension, bull bar, winch and tyres. Animal strike protection, self recovery, and the capability to take it anywhere. This is where most serious tourers land.
💰 $40K+ — Full touring territory. GVM upgrade, canopy, lithium power, the lot.

Most people don't realise how quickly a 300 Series runs out of payload.

4 blokes, 3 tonne van, 300kg on the ball weight, all your gear — you're already over your GVM before you leave the driveway.

Thinking about towing a van or camper trailer? Save this first. 📌

Most people buying a setup have no idea they're already over their limits before they've even packed a bag.

Here's 6 things you need to know before your first tow 👇

1️⃣ Your limit isn't just the tow rating — it's GCM. Car and trailer together, fully loaded.
2️⃣ Ball weight counts as load on your car. On a 2 tonne van that's roughly 200kg eating into your payload.
3️⃣ Where you pack matters more than how much. Weight at the back causes sway. Heavy stuff low, over the axle.
4️⃣ Check your trailer tyres — not just the tread. They perish with age before they look worn.
5️⃣ If your trailer is over 750kg it has its own brakes. They need a controller fitted and dialled in.
6️⃣ Don't guess your weights. Load it up exactly how you'll travel and hit a weighbridge.
