Australia has maintained a dedicated Minister for Women since 1976, ensuring women's issues receive focused ministerial attention. No equivalent role exists for men, despite the following documented outcomes: In 2024, 2,529 Australian men died by su***de at a rate of 18.3 per 100,000, compared to 778 women at 5.5 per 100,000. Three in four su***des in Australia are male. (ABS, Causes of Death 2024) In 2024, men accounted for 96% of all workplace fatalities. (Safe Work Australia 2025) 56% of the 122,000 Australians experiencing homelessness on census night 2021 were male. (AIHW) Australian men live an average of four years less than women. (AIHW) Research tabled in Parliament found more than half of separated fathers reported suicidal thoughts, with legal stress identified as a primary contributing factor. (AIHW) No minister currently holds a formal mandate to address these outcomes specifically for men.

We therefore ask the House to call on the Australian Government to appoint a dedicated Minister for Men, equivalent in status and scope to the existing Minister for Women, to provide formal ministerial advocacy for male welfare outcomes in Australia.

The majority of victims of dv are men and not women . Dv is not only physical.

Women are killing men or increasingly causing harm to men through non-physical forms of domestic abuse, particularly psychological abuse, while often portraying themselves as victims. While 150 women have been killed by their ex-partners and 50 men have been directly killed by women, a much larger number—around 2,400 men—are driven to su***de during or after abusive relationships due to psychological manipulation by a woman .

Additionally, thousands more men suffer from addiction, mental health issues, and physical health problems such as heart disease, cancer, diabetes, and depression as a result of psychological abuse by women. This cycle of abuse must be addressed and stopped.

Research confirms that trauma and betrayal induce stress, which elevates cortisol levels. Chronic elevation of cortisol impacts both mental and physical health, increasing the risk of obesity, heart disease, cancer and other serious illnesses that can lead to death or disability .
