Big weekend for BMSense with the mobile van out and about across Sydney.

The van signage is only temporary magnetic signs for now until the van is properly signwritten, but it’s good to finally have the BMSense name out on the road.

This weekend was a busy one, with 4 BMW and MINI starter batteries replaced after battery warning lights and starter battery notifications, front brake pads and discs replaced on a 2010 BMW 1 Series, and a 2016 MINI Cooper diagnosed with an engine light and loud ticking noise, which we were able to fix in 1 visit.

The van is set up with BMW and MINI diagnostic equipment, access to BMW and MINI technical repair information, a tool box, jack, axle stands and the parts needed to carry out mobile BMW and MINI repairs at your home or workplace.

Old parts replaced over the weekend were also kept aside and shown, so customers could see what had actually been replaced.

Great to see everything coming together and another busy weekend done.

MINI battery replacement and registration completed in Sydney.

This MINI had previously had a battery replaced by roadside assistance, however the vehicle later failed to start. In many cases, roadside or general repairers may fit an aftermarket battery without registering it correctly to the vehicle.

BMW and MINI vehicles require the correct battery type and battery registration so the vehicle’s charging system knows a new battery has been fitted. When this is not done, it can lead to electrical issues, poor battery performance and reduced battery life.

BMSense fitted a new genuine MINI battery supplied through a dealership and registered it correctly to the vehicle.

From our experience, you cannot beat the quality of a genuine BMW or MINI battery. Genuine batteries are designed for the vehicle and generally last a lot longer than many aftermarket options.

The MINI is now up and running with the correct battery fitted and registered.

Another happy MINI customer looked after at home in Sydney.

This customer had received a dealership quote for front brake pads and discs and reached out to BMSense for a second opinion.

BMW & MINI gear selector repair in Sydney

This weekend we visited a customer whose MINI Cooper was displaying the warning “Secure vehicle against rolling” and “Secure vehicle with parking brake when stationary” on the dashboard.

After diagnosis, the issue was traced to a failed torsion spring inside the gear selector assembly. This is a common problem seen on certain BMW and MINI models.

We repaired the gear selector mechanism, replaced the faulty torsion spring, and cleared the transmission warning messages. The vehicle now operates normally with no further faults.

Is your Central Information Display screen or instrument cluster displaying a transmission warning error message - Secure vehicle against rolling, Secure vehicle with parking brake when stationary or Secure vehicle from rolling?

Don't be spending huge repair cost at a dealership, when you can save heaps with just replacing the spring!

With a decade of experience working for a BMW/Mini dealership (fully qualified BMW Diagnostic Technician), this fault is a frequent and common fault on selected BMW & Mini Models with automatic transmission.
The secure vehicle against warning error message or similar will usually log a fault code - "0x420106 Shiftlock Solenoid: Selector lever wrongly not locked in P". The Mini / BMW diagnostic software will generate a test module for this fault code and will state to replace the complete gear selector assembly. The cost to supply and fit a new gear selector from a dealer ranges from $2500 to $3000.

My curiosity with this common issue made me look online for any information on these gear selectors. There were many video's and forum discussion regarding the secure the vehicle from rolling error message. To my surprise, the cause for this fault is due to a failed internal spring and that this could be replaced saving many BMW / Mini owners thousands in repair costs

Most repair guides will show to re-shape the old failed spring which isn't best practice. I have always fitted a new spring for added peace of mind and provide the old spring to all my clients for transparency.
