Taking your offroad without sorting these five things first can leave you stranded a long way from help.

And some of them are things a lot of owners don’t think about until something goes wrong.

In this video, Dannie runs through five basics we recommend addressing before taking a WK2 Grand Cherokee into the dirt, including UHF communications, suitable tyres, proper front recovery points, cooling system reliability and a way to deflate and reinflate your tyres.

You don’t need a massive lift, bull bar, roof tent and a catalogue full of accessories just to get started.

But you do need to cover the essentials.

Sometimes a blown head gasket isn’t the end of the story, it’s the start of a much better one.

This 5.7 HEMI Grand Cherokee came to us after an overheating issue took out the head gasket, meaning the cylinder heads had to come off.

With the engine already apart, it was the perfect opportunity to go a little further.

Performance camshaft, cold air intake, full Pacemaker exhaust and a custom dyno tune later and this thing has turned into one seriously tough Jeep.

If you’ve got a 5.7 or 6.4 in a , or and you’re already considering an delete, it can also be the perfect time to look at performance upgrades while the engine is apart.

We’re fitting it out with some seriously useful gear, along with a range of off road parts like this tough E-locker, to make sure this Wrangler is properly equipped to go wherever it needs to, mainly Jeep Jamboree and back.

Charlie’s getting stuck into the hose in the valley on this Grand Cherokee as part of our four hose package, before it heads north for some off roading in FNQ.

A blown hose in the valley is the last thing you want putting an end to your outback adventure. Better to tackle it in the workshop than get stranded on the tracks.

Haven't done yours but still want to get out there? Throw one of our hose packages in your kit, just in case. Better to have everything you need in one place than wait on a tow.

The factory towing eye that could end up flying through someone’s windscreen.

The towing eye in your ’s spare wheel well should NOT be mistaken for an offroad recovery point.

Using the screw in front towing eye to drag your Grand Cherokee out of a bog can turn a recovery effort into a flying metal projectile and put someone’s life at risk.

An EGR leak doesn’t automatically mean your needs a $3,000 EGR cooler.

We’ve seen these leaks quoted for complete EGR replacements when the problem was actually the seals underneath it.

The cooler itself can fail, but finding exactly where the coolant is escaping could save you a hefty bill.

In this video, we show you where these seals sit, what leaks and why checking the little things matters before replacing the expensive parts.

This WK2 Grand Cherokee came in making the sort of noise nobody wants to hear. Metal in the oil filter was a bad sign, and pulling it apart revealed just how ugly things had become.

A spun big end bearing, a badly scored crankshaft and enough heat to fuse the bearing to the conrod. This engine had well and truly had enough.

RAM rear diff failure's are one of the biggest reasons we see these trucks arrive on a tow truck.

The frustrating part? A lot of it is avoidable.

We recommend changing the rear diff oil every 40,000km, especially if the vehicle is towing.

But there’s another trap.

Different RAM diff ratios can require different oil specifications, and some rear diffs also require the correct limited slip additive. Get the oil wrong, leave out the required supplement, or stretch the service interval too far and you could be setting yourself up for premature diff failure.

This well driven Supercharged Wrangler came in with a nasty whining noise from the rear end.

A quick inspection revealed very metallic diff oil and a magnet through the fill plug pulled out a broken tooth.

So, there was only one thing for it. Time for a rebuild.

Wont be long before this weapon of is back on the trails.
