Water has long been the default tool for dust suppression in mining, job sites or hard stands, but it's an expensive and ineffective solution. Every litre carted across site comes with a cost, trucks, fuel, operators, downtime spent waiting for repeat passes and the water itself. The relief it provides is temporary at best, within minutes moisture evaporates and the dust returns, often worse than before. Wetting dust only temporarily binds the particles, this allows machines and other vehicles to grind those small particles smaller and smaller. The cycle is endless, the cost is recurring and the result is a site that's no safer or cleaner than it was yesterday.
It's a poor environmental outcome too, large amounts of dust can be released into the air each day and staff and the local environment are exposed to the very airborne dust the treatment was meant to control.
Beyond the dust problem, water is actively destroying the roads it's sprayed on, saturated haul roads soften, rut, pothole and break down under loaded traffic, driving up grading hours, rolling resistance, tyre wear, and fuel burn, costs that compound shift after shift. Wet surfaces also create unsafe operating conditions, reduced traction, longer stopping distances, slippery walkways, and unpredictable handling for heavy vehicles.
