⛽ PETROL IN A DIESEL - PART 2

DON’T TURN THE KEY!

If you realise you’ve put petrol into a diesel vehicle, one of the worst things you can do is start it.

Once the engine is started, that contaminated fuel can be drawn through the fuel system and into the high-pressure components.

That can turn a wrong-fuel mistake into a much bigger repair.

With the Prado we showed you yesterday, we first needed to work out exactly what condition the engine was in.

So before we went any further, we:

🔧 Used a bore camera to inspect the tops of the pistons and cylinder bores for signs of damage
🔧 Carried out a compression test
✅ Confirmed engine compression was OK
🔧 Installed new injectors
🔧 Replaced the fuel filter
⛽ Bypassed the contaminated fuel tank
🔧 Supplied the engine with clean diesel from a separate container
✅ Successfully test-ran the engine

This gave us a safe way to prove the engine and fuel system before moving on to the final repair.

Friday: we’ll show you how we finished the job and got it back onto clean diesel.

⛽ Petrol in a diesel - Part 1

Remember the Prado we showed you Friday?

Here’s where the story starts.

The vehicle came to PMR after petrol had been mixed into the diesel fuel system.

By the time it arrived, the injectors had already been removed and there was also damage around the 5th injector and wiring.

So this wasn’t a case of simply draining the tank, filling it with diesel and turning the key.

Before we tried to start anything, we needed to find out exactly what condition the engine and fuel system were actually in.

Next up: how do you safely test an engine like this without feeding contaminated fuel straight back through it?

This Prado arrived at PMR Diesel after petrol made its way into the diesel fuel system.

Sounds simple enough - drain the tank, put diesel back in and away you go… right?

Not quite. 👀

By the time this one reached us, parts had already been removed and there were a few more problems we needed to work through before we could even think about starting it.

🔧 OUT WITH THE OLD, IN WITH THE NEW

A bit of turbo work happening in the PMR workshop this week.

Old turbo out and a fresh replacement ready to go in. 👌

Turbo problems aren't something you want to leave too long - loss of power, smoke, unusual noises or increased oil use can all be signs something isn't right.

Sometimes it's worth getting onto the problem early before it turns into a much bigger repair.

Nothing quite like seeing old vs new side by side. 🔧

💡 LIGHTBAR INSTALL + WIRING TIDY UP

A nice little upgrade through the workshop.

New lightbar fitted along with a tidy-up of the existing wiring - cleaned up, secured properly and ready to go.

It's not just about how it looks when it's finished. A clean, tidy install behind the scenes is just as important. 👌

Who else reckons a decent lightbar is a must-have on a 4WD?
