Be mindful of tow trucks on the side of the road.
Have you ever driven past a tow truck loading a damaged or broken-down vehicle onto its trailer and really thought about the person doing that job?
Tow truck drivers work in some of the most dangerous conditions on our roads.
They are often standing close to moving traffic, securing vehicles, operating equipment and concentrating on a task that requires precision.
They may be dealing with a vehicle damaged in a serious crash, while traffic continues to pass just metres away.
One moment of inattention from a passing driver can have devastating consequences.
When you see a tow truck stopped on the roadside with its warning lights operating, please slow down, stay alert and give the driver as much room as safely possible.
In some states you must awfully sit down to 40 km an hour if it is safe to do so as you pass the tow truck.
Avoid sudden movements, keeping a safe distance and never become distracted by what's happening at the scene.
If it is safe and appropriate, move over to provide extra space, while remaining aware of other vehicles, road conditions and oncoming traffic.
Remember, a tow truck driver cannot simply step away from a vehicle halfway through loading it.
They need to concentrate on securing heavy machinery and vehicles while often working in an exposed and vulnerable position.
Be patient.
Don't tailgate, speed past or become frustrated because you need to slow down for a few seconds.
Your inconvenience is temporary, but the consequences of a collision could change a familyβs life forever.
These workers are human too.
They have families waiting for them at home, and they deserve to finish their shift safely.
They also witness the heartbreaking aftermath of road trauma, including the devastation experienced by families and people who survive with life-changing injuries.
Roadside safety is everyone's responsibility. A little patience, awareness and respect can make a real difference.
