🕰️ The Bentley MkVI turns 80 this year, and it quietly changed how the company worked. Launched in 1946 as the first post-war Bentley, it brought in Ernest Hives’ Rationalised Range: one scalable chassis with shared parts across several wheelbases and engine sizes. It was the first big strategic decision Rolls-Royce took without Henry Royce, who had died in 1933.

It was also the first Bentley you could buy with the body already on it, a Standard Steel shell from Pressed Steel styled by JP Blatchley, though coachbuilders kept taking orders alongside it. The 4257cc six made 146bhp, later 156bhp from 4566cc, enough for 100mph. 5,201 were built by 1952. Ready-made, or coachbuilt?
