𝐎𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐞 𝐋𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐒𝐮𝐜𝐜𝐞𝐬𝐬: 𝐑𝐄𝐄𝐏 𝐱 𝐋𝐨𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐌𝐞𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐜𝐬
One of the real highlights this term for REEP was a hands-on visit organised by REEP Student Support Coach, Tegan, where three Sorell School students spent time at a local mechanics workshop — seeing what work can actually look like beyond the classroom.
Thanks to the strong relationships Tegan has built with students and local businesses, the group was welcomed into Sorell Service Centre, where they met the team, looked around the workshop, asked questions, and learned what a normal day in the automotive industry really involves. For many students, this was their first time in a workplace like this — and having someone they trust alongside them made all the difference.
Before the visit, students were supported to think about how to introduce themselves, what questions to ask, and how to make a good impression. These small but important steps help young people build confidence and feel prepared. That support is at the heart of how REEP works — walking alongside students as they explore what comes next, at their own pace.
The best part? All three students have now been offered work experience at Sorell Service Centre during Term 2. That’s a huge step, giving them the chance to keep learning, build skills, and see if this could be a future pathway for them.
We’re incredibly grateful to Ashton and the team at Sorell Service Centre for giving local young people a chance, and we’re proud of the students for stepping outside their comfort zone and giving something new a go. Experiences like this show just how powerful the right support, at the right time, can be in helping young people feel hopeful and confident about their future.
