ONE CHUNKY TOOTH!

We've made some big changes to the overworked Barra chain tensioner with our Street Tensioner due for release in September.

We've made a host of improvements but in this video we'll focus on the 'locker' ratchet mechanism.

We have given it a decent upgrade in strength and durability because we know what you'll be doing with it! Now CNC machined in Sydney, Australia from billet EN steel with a thicker pin and a single STRONG tooth.

The big change is moving from two small teeth to one large tooth to give more strength and contact area. This allows us to have a larger, deeper engagement during the inevitable lock up that occurs in these tensioners.

What's 'lock up?' - That's just what we call the dynamic where the hydraulic assistance inside the tensioner is overcome by chain force causing the piston to be pushed into the tensioner, engaging the locking ratchet. The ratchet acts as a mechanical backstop, taking all the chain force directly via the tooth/teeth of the piston and ratchet.

That's not ideal but it happens on every engine because we have to limit travel for a variety of different different deck heights. Our race tensioner has some component changes to try eliminate this. FYI - if the ratchet fails on these tensioners, the body becomes the second backstop and stops the chain going fully slack.

We've designed this street tensioner to work with +-1mm deck height. Anything more than that.... wait for the race tensioner. This means gassy NA+T setups with a 1.8mm head gasket and a decked head will work, but we've designed it for a 1mm head gasket and a light skim on the head. We'll cover more on this in the next post.

If you have questions about the ratchet mechanism and our updates, let us know in the comments below!

We're running through another batch of ported and rebuilt alloy oil pumps with our billet gas nitrided gears and backing plate.

We 'port' these in multiple key areas to improve pressure regulation and stability which reduces losses in the pump and reduces noise and vibration.

Each oil pump is inspected and set up with our recently refined gas nitrided billet gears and backing plate before being run on our oil pump test rig and signed off.

We recommend our medium pressure spring for these pumps which delivers ~80psi and is more than enough for 1800hp without upsetting VCT, the chain tensioner and external components like your turbo.

For higher load and stress applications like drift, drag, circuit, marine, 4x4/offroad, or towing, we recommend upgrading to our Cast Iron Race Series pump using our custom designed housing for increased thermal stability (no pressure loss at high temp) and thrust resistance.

The first Atomic Street tensioners are being assembled as production is under way and ETA is early September. We'll be starting our Atomic tensioner line with the street tensioner, a drop in OEM+ tensioner designed at matching the modern requirements of a Barra.

You guys are pushing these engines well beyond what they were designed for so we've made some big updates to one of the hardest working components in the motor based on 18 months of focused testing. We'll dive into the tech side of it in a few months and share the knowledge.

Key info for now:
- Street Tensioner ETA Late August/early Sept
- Est. RRP $250-$300
- Drop in OEM+ replacement
- Designed for mild spring/cam upgrades, stock(ish) oil pressure, not 100psi + and 9000rpm
- Atomic Race tensioner coming late 2026 - requires new guide and pivot
_ Designed, machined, and assembled here in Sydney, AUS

DON'T CALL US FOR AN ETA - KEEP AN EYE ON THIS PAGE!

You can still get all our kits minus the tensioner here

https://atomicperformanceproducts.com/collections/timing-system

An overview of updates on the Street Tensioner:
- CNC billet steel construction with tight tolerances
- OEM compatibility - works with all known existing timing kits
- Heavy Duty ratchet system
- 16mm piston up from 14mm which means much wider teeth
- Revised angle and contact position to reduce friction and guide stress
- Improved check valve system
- Increased locking pin diameter
- Integrated backstop to avoid complete loss of chain tension
- Integrated lubrication channel
- Integrated Air bleed system
- Improved ratchet driver system

All this makes for....
- Improved damping for better chain and timing stability
- Quieter timing system/engine
- Less wear
- More consistent tension and not over tension
- Reduced chain and valve train load
- Less servicing
- Reduced chance of guide or chain snapping
- More limiter bashing without tears

Nearly ready to send!

02/07/2026

We're ready to hit the river!

Big thank you to the Xplicit Racing team for working on this with us. We're having a great time and we love to see how well everyone works together as a team. Work isn't over yet but to hear it run for the first time is just awesome.

We have a lot of shout outs to do and content to share once we've caught back up.

I just want to note - whilst we have designed these blocks with a 3000hp minimum requirement, this is not the goal of this specific engine or boat. We have a turbo sized for ~1800hp. We will learn about the overall package and requirements very quickly given how long the boat runs WOT for. The next block is going for a torque terror test in a drag car.

Stay tuned!

Check this!

Y’all are the freakin best.

Who’d have thought a boring old Ford Falcon family car 6 banger would make such waves!

We appreciate all of you and your support! 🏁🙏🥇🇦🇺

Alright alright alright we should probably update you! We've been busy building the motor for the Xplicit Racing boat with our new Atomic Cast Barra Block. Block #0001 looks fantastic and went together nicely.

We are absolutely stoked with how this is going so far but we're not done yet! Testing is coming up and we'll keep you all posted. 18 months of hard work and awesome engineering has paid off and we can see how different decisions at the time might have landed us in a different spot.

We've been shooting lots of video along the way and will do the same during testing. We're focused on getting the data we need out of this and helping the Xplicit team be up and running and ready to race! We know you all have so many questions and we will answer what we can and we're excited to share the details and challenges when we're ready.

We're very grateful to all those who have helped us get to this point and we'll do our proper shout out when we've had some sleep and caught back up.

Production round 1 spots have been filled and we have a couple of spots left for batch 2. If you are serious about an Atomic long motor with one of these blocks or interested in a block by itself, please email us at [email protected]

For now enjoy some engine p**n!

--------------------------------------------------------
**Some disclaimers**
- Block pictured is not the final production version
- Block pictured has been modified to suit this application
- Block pictured is representitive of our base model casting with 5mm bores and wet deck
- All engine internal components are Atomic except for collets!
- Only 3 parts on this long motor are not brand new - front cover, valve cover, and sump
- Our design and engineering process is proprietary
- We can't and won't share details about some things
- Cast is fast and built to last

Note - the block which customers will receive from #0003 onwards will already have additional features and improvements over this casting that we're keeping to ourselves for now.
