Most drivers have never been told what's actually happening when they press the pedal.

The pad and rotor never touch the way you'd think. On the first hard stop with new pads, the pad lays down a microscopic layer of its own friction material across the rotor surface. Every stop after that, the pad presses against this transferred film, not the bare cast iron.

This is why bedding-in matters. Manufacturers like Brembo and StopTech specify 8 to 10 moderate stops from 60 mph down to 10 mph, with cooling between, before hard use. Skip it and the film deposits unevenly, which causes the steering wheel shudder most drivers blame on warped rotors.

Rotors almost never actually warp. A 2007 SAE paper by Jacobsson and Wijaya showed that "warping" complaints were 95% uneven pad transfer, not metal deformation. Sand the deposits off and the shudder disappears.

The film also explains why you should never mix pad compounds. Switching from organic to semi-metallic without resurfacing the rotor means the new pad is grabbing the old pad's leftover film. It binds badly, performs worse, and wears unevenly for the first thousand miles. [SE9UV]
