𝗗𝗣𝗙 𝗠𝗬𝗧𝗛𝗦
Please, if you’re going to use Google to diagnose your own DPF issues, do it knowing that a lot of what you read may be...lets say unhelpful. You know what they say, never let the truth get in the way of a good story!
Google will have the right answers hidden in all the wrong ones. Contact us and we will help decipher fact from fiction.
Some common myths to be aware of:
❌ 𝐀𝐧𝐲 𝐯𝐞𝐡𝐢𝐜𝐥𝐞 𝐨𝐥𝐝𝐞𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝟐𝟎𝟏𝟎 𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐥𝐞𝐠𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐃𝐏𝐅 𝐫𝐞𝐦𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐝.Incorrect! All vehicles are to adhere to the emission control laws at the time of their manufacture. Removing any DPF for on road use is illegal.
❌ 𝐓𝐨 𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐫𝐲 𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐚 𝐫𝐞𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧, 𝐝𝐫𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐯𝐞𝐡𝐢𝐜𝐥𝐞 𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐝 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝟑𝟎 𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐮𝐭𝐞𝐬.Incorrect! The harder you drive it the more soot it will produce. Just drive your vehicle normally out on the highway, this will complete the regeneration as long as all the components in the DPF system are working correctly.
❌ 𝐈 𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐃𝐏𝐅 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐛𝐥𝐞𝐦𝐬. 𝐈𝐭 𝐦𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝐛𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐃𝐏𝐅𝐬 𝐟𝐚𝐮𝐥𝐭.Incorrect! The DPF is a filter. If it blocks up, it's just doing its job and you may have a problem with your engine, or the vehicle is being driven on lots of short trips where a regeneration is unable to complete.
❌ 𝐌𝐲 𝐃𝐏𝐅 𝐢𝐬 𝐛𝐥𝐨𝐜𝐤𝐞𝐝 - 𝐈 𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐟𝐢𝐱 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐦𝐲𝐬𝐞𝐥𝐟 𝐛𝐲 𝐣𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝐫𝐞𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐜𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐢𝐭. Incorrect! There is a reason why a DPF will block up. There is a good chance that just replacing your blocked DPF will result in another blocked DPF. Have the vehicle diagnosed by someone who knows how DPFs work and can prevent this from happening.
❌ 𝐃𝐏𝐅𝐬 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐞𝐱𝐩𝐞𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐫𝐞𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐜𝐞. Incorrect! In the early days when this technology was new, knowledge of these systems was not fully understood. Even the dealerships were unable to successfully diagnose the new technology. But over time the systems were learned, and diagnosis can now be pinpointed to the exact fault. DPFs can be cleaned and aftermarket units are now available, making the repair a 5th of what they used to cost to repair. If you have any issues with your DPF, make sure you find a mechanic that specialises in your make of vehicle, and knows how the DPF system works. This should make sure that the repair cost is kept to a minimum, and remember a cheap quote is not always the best option.

𝗛𝘆𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗮𝗶 𝗦𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗙𝗲 - 𝗗𝗲𝗳𝘆𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗟𝗮𝘄𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗣𝗵𝘆𝘀𝗶𝗰𝘀
A SantaFe came into the workshop with a blocked DPF. A quick check with the scan tool revealed only blocked DPF codes👍. After a clean it was running perfectly with only 6KPa differential pressure👍. A final check of the data was carried out. Hang on....exhaust manifold temperature 100 degrees👎?!! That cannot be correct unless Hyundai have defied the laws of physics and produced a cool burning engine!
This sensor fault was identified with a final data check and did not produce a fault code. If the computer registers a low exhaust temperature, it may not start the regeneration process and the DPF will block up without warning of this issue. We replaced the sensor and then had the correct 300 to 600 degrees. The fault codes will not always point you in the right direction. If in doubt, contact us because we've seen it all!

𝐂𝐡𝐞𝐜𝐤 𝐘𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐕𝐖 𝐆𝐨𝐥𝐟 𝐅𝐨𝐫 𝐒𝐨𝐜𝐤𝐬
VW Golfs have made their mark. Over 35 million have been made. That’s more than the classic VW Beetle. They must be doing something right! However we do see VW Golfs in our workshop from time to time with DPF issues.
A common problem we have found is the jamming up of the swirl valves (also known as runner valves) that are located in the intake manifold. These valves jammed shut is like trying to run a marathon with a sock in your mouth! The engine needs fresh air, so if the valves jam up, they close and the lack of air will cause the exhaust to be very sooty and overload the DPF. So, be sure to check your VW Golf for socks!

𝐁𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐎𝐧 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐇𝐞𝐚𝐭! 🔥🔥🔥🔥
As the regeneration process starts, the DPF temperature sensors located on the DPF unit indicate the internal temperature of the DPF. This can be a great way to make sure that the regeneration process is working.
The internal temperature is normally around 650°C. You may find the sensor closest to the oxygen catalyst is lower - this is normal.
Some vehicles also have an exhaust temperature sensor on the exhaust manifold or turbo. When diagnosing why your DPF has issues always check these values using a scan tool. In some cases where a temperature sensor fails and causes DPF issues, the failure may not show up a fault code, but the data may be incorrect. Check the temperature values for correct readings by driving the vehicle and watching the data. The exhaust temperature readings should change as the vehicle is driven. If the reading remains the same and does not change, replace the sensor.

Why Don’t You Just Delete It?
We get the comment all the time about removing DPFs. But this is a bad idea. Maybe people do not understand that the DPF is there to stop lung cancer-causing particles from being emitted from exhaust pipes. Maybe some people just don’t care. Luckily, most of us do the right thing.
There are companies that will carry out a DPF delete and get around the law by writing on the invoice “for off road use only”. This largely shifts the blame from themselves to the person caught driving the vehicle on the road. The transport department are getting tech savvy and are now using temperature sensors to tell if the internals have been removed from the DPF.
DPF cleaning is more affordable than buying a new DPF and means everyone can do the right thing and not resort to deleting the DPF. Breathe easy knowing your DPF is stopping cancer-causing particles from being emitted and that you are not driving around an illegal vehicle.
