Safer roads start with better driver training 🚗
The Cook Labor Government is strengthening Western Australia’s Graduated Licensing System to better prepare young and novice drivers before they get behind the wheel.
Key reforms include:
✅ Learner period increasing from 6 to 12 months
✅ Provisional period increasing from 2 to 3 years
✅ Supervised driving hours increasing from 50 to 80
✅ Online theory and hazard tests introduced
✅ Stronger mobile phone restrictions for learner and P-plate drivers - no making or receiving calls
✅ Zero BAC for supervising drivers
These evidence-based reforms were shaped by feedback from more than 7,700 Western Australians through community consultation.
We’re also opening consultation on proposed motorcycle licensing reforms from 3 May, with more information available in the link below.
Western Australia will also align with the rest of the nation by separating the car and motorcycle Graduated Licensing Systems.
Changes to be rolled out by the end of 2027.
