One of the things Nathan writes about monthly in CQ Today is the practical side of 4WD ownership. The questions people have but do not always think to ask.

We want to bring that here.

If you have a question about your 4WD, drop it in the comments or send it directly. Servicing intervals, towing setup, what an ECU remap actually does, suspension, whether a warning light is serious or not, whether something is worth fixing before the next trip.

No bad questions. The ones that come up most often are usually the ones nobody wants to admit they do not already know.

Spring's still a way off, but the tracks are already drying out and the dust is starting to build. Central Queensland's dry season doesn't wait for the calendar.

One thing that catches people out heading inland this time of year: tyre pressures set for the highway don't hold up on sand. Drop them before you hit the rough stuff, and reset them before you're back on bitumen. It sounds small. It's the difference between a smooth run and a long walk.

If you're planning a trip before the season turns, get the rig looked at first. Cheaper to find a problem in the workshop than out past mobile reception.

Apprenticeships don't get much airtime, so here's some.

Every person on our tools started somewhere unknown. Logbook in hand, learning the difference between a noise that matters and a noise that doesn't. We take training seriously here. Accredited qualifications, not just time served.

Skipper supervises most of it from somewhere near the toolbox, offering no technical input whatsoever but excellent moral support.

If you've ever wondered who's actually working on your 4WD, it's not a franchise roster. It's a small, local, family-run team who own and drive 4x4s themselves.

One we get asked regularly: how often should you actually service a 4WD that's doing real work?

The logbook gives you the manufacturer's recommended interval. What it doesn't account for is how the vehicle is being used.

A diesel doing regular outback tracks, river crossings and dusty inland runs is under significantly more load than one doing highway kilometres and school runs. Oil picks up contaminants faster. Filters work harder. Wear points add up quicker.

The logbook is a minimum, not a ceiling. If your 4WD is doing what it's supposed to do, it's worth having a conversation about your service interval before something flags at the wrong time.

Sometimes your 4WD doesn't tell you there's a problem with a warning light.

It just feels... different.

Maybe it's not pulling like it used to. Maybe fuel is disappearing a little quicker, or it's just not driving as smoothly as it once did.
