THE 476,000 KM WARNING

In a nation separated by dust, distance and some of the harshest country on earth, there is a number that quietly holds us together.

476,000 kilometres.

Thin layers of bitumen stretching across Australia. Roads that feed towns, connect emergency services, carry medicine, move freight and bind communities together.

But that web is slowly cracking.

And the frightening part is that this is becoming a job too big to simply fix tomorrow, next year, or when the budget improves. So we patch. We bandaid. We repair one section while another begins to fail.

At the same time, billions are being committed to wind, solar and the energy transition. Whatever your opinion on those projects, one thing should be beyond politics: essential infrastructure cannot be sacrificed in pursuit of an ideal.

Wind turbines don't deliver food to a remote town. Solar panels don't get an ambulance down a broken highway.

Roads do.

They look after the children of the future because they carry almost everything those children will need.

A country can have all the grand plans in the world.

But first, it has to keep the roads beneath its feet.
