With strong winds and unsettled conditions forecast over the next couple of days, now is a good reminder that the smartest decision on the water is sometimes staying off it.

Rough weather increases risk, even for experienced operators. Reduced visibility, sudden wind changes, and short, sharp chop can quickly turn a routine trip into a dangerous situation.

If you are not heading out, use this time productively:

Check all safety equipment is compliant and onboard

Confirm expiry dates on flares, life jackets, EPIRBs, and fire extinguishers

Inspect your vessel’s mechanical condition

Book servicing or maintenance if required

Good skippers plan ahead. Safe boating starts before you leave the ramp.

Stay safe on the water.

About 12 months ago, life jacket laws changed in QLD.
Do you know when they must be worn... Or is it going to cost you?

Check the laws here:

A lifejacket is a vital piece of safety equipment that could save your life. Put the lifejacket on as part of your pre-trip preparation. It is a lot harder to put a lifejacket on during an emergency and almost impossible to put it on when you are in the water.

Navigation lights must be displayed between sunset and sunrise including jet skis.

Not sure what light you need?

Have a look at the MSQ site here: https://www.msq.qld.gov.au/safety/navigation-lights

Or reach out to one of our trainers for assistance.

Navigation lights should be fitted by the manufacturer or an authorised person. Smaller boats have a number of options including bracketed or combination suction-capped lights. These types of navigation lights are available from marine dealers.

MYTH: "If I've got a lifejacket onboard, it doesn’t matter if I'm wearing it."

🚫 BUSTED: In an emergency, you won’t have time to rummage through compartments or under the seats looking for a lifejacket, and it’s almost impossible to put on once you are in the water.

🦺 FACT: Lifejackets are the seatbelts of the sea - they only work if you’re actually wearing them. Especially in risky conditions or unexpected weather, putting it on before you need it can be the difference between life and loss.

There are also new lifejacket laws in QLD requiring you to wear them in specific high-risk situations. Know the rules, wear the jacket, and look after your crew.

A safety message from Maritime Safety Qld:

Lifejacket rules are in place to protect you and your loved ones. There were 64 boating fatalities in Queensland in the last five years, and only five were known to be wearing their lifejackets at the time of the incident. Data shows that the people who are at the highest risk of drowning at sea include children and those boating alone, at night, or when crossing coastal bars. This change was broadly supported by stakeholder and community consultations undertaken by MSQ in 2022.

When do you need to wear a lifejacket?

Boating alone or only with children under 12 on an open boat

The weather might be cool, but the water has been absolutely perfect lately.

There’s nothing like crisp mornings and calm conditions to remind you why boating and jetskiing is worth every moment.

If you’ve been thinking about getting your boat or jetski licence, now’s the time. We also offer advanced vessel handling for those wanting to level up their skills and confidence on the water.
