What a ripper of a review to read. You rock Matt…. 💙

“Spotted this place on Google Maps and decided to head that way, not really knowing what to expect. We ended up discovering a cool, sleepy little coastal town and an awesome caravan park just a stone’s throw from the famous Long Jetty. The caravan park itself was fantastic, with a great old-school building serving as the rec room, a well-equipped camp kitchen, and awesome hot showers. But what really made the stay special was the friendly and welcoming staff.

A big shout-out to Dave, who not only keeps the park looking its best but also gave us some great tips on how to squid from the jetty. It was that extra bit of local knowledge and friendliness that made the stay even better.

We absolutely loved our time here and hope to make it back one day. Thanks, Long Jetty Caravan Park, for an awesome stay! Highly recommended.” Matt A

LONG JETTY & LAND-BASED TARGETS

​🦑 Calamari Squid: The clear, deep water off the end of the Long Jetty makes it a premier squid spot. Cast size 2.5–3.5 jigs over the w**d beds and pylon edges during the slack water hours.
​
🐟 King George Whiting & Silver Trevally: Quality Whiting and Trevally are taking fresh pipis, squid strips, or prawns fished on light gear. Use a standard running sinker or patternoster rig thrown towards the sand/seagrass boundaries.
​
🎣 Flathead & Bream: Active along the drop-offs and underneath the jetty structure. Soft plastics (3–4 inch paddle tails) or fresh bait fished close to the bottom are yielding steady catches on an ebbing tide.

​🦈 Gummy Shark & Snapper: Night sessions off the end of the pier offer a genuine shot at solid Gummy Sharks and seasonal Snapper. Rig up with sturdy gear, fresh pilchards or squid, and a running sinker to handle the strong currents through Lewis Channel.

LOCAL KNOWLEDGE & SAFETY TIPS

​➖ Mind the Currents: Tidal flow around the Long Jetty and Lewis Channel can run like a freight train. Fish the high and low slack water windows for the best presentation and lightest sinker selection.
​
➖ Jetty Etiquette & Gear: The structure stretches 900+ metres into deep water. Bring a long-handled drop net or heavy leader if targeting larger species, as pulling fish up to the deck can snap lighter lines.
​Park Bait & Tackle: Missing terminal tackle or need fresh bait? Drop by the caravan park office to restock before heading out.

Built. Burnt. Rebuilt. And still standing. 🌊

The story of the Port Welshpool Long Jetty is one of resilience.

📍 1936–1938
The original Long Jetty was constructed, stretchi ng 850 metres (with varying widths along its length, the maximum being originally 7.2m, later 9.1m) into Corner Inlet and becoming an important link for fishing, trade and Bass Strait industry.

📍 Over the decades
It became a working part of Port Welshpool, used by fishing vessels, minesweepers during WWII, coastal traders and the emerging Bass Strait oil and gas industry. Its isolation from residential areas facilitated its use as a dangerous goods jetty for King Island and Tasmanian mines. The link to Tasmania was briefly restored from 1990-93 with the operation of the Seacat ferry from Port Welshpool.

📍 2003
After decades of use, the deteriorating jetty was closed to the public.

📍 2010
Another fire caused significant damage, with part of the structure having to be removed.

📍 2012 onwards
After years of campaigning by the local community, restoration began - bringing the much-loved Long Jetty back to life.

And today, you can walk its distinctive curve once again.

It may not be exactly the same jetty that stood here in 1938, but the new structure pretty much follows the original path, preserving the shape, story and spirit of a Port Welshpool icon.

Nearly 90 years of history.
A few fires.
A lot of resilience.

Dave has gone wild with the company card BUT our bait and tackle station is looking the goods. Stocked with only the best tools to catch some ripper fish… and it’s not even done yet!!
