Treadwear Explained – 140tw vs 240tw (Which is Right for You?)

If you’ve been browsing the Skidmark Solutions shop, you’ve likely noticed the "tw" numbers next to our Nemesis. Whether it’s a 140tw or a 240tw, that number—the Treadwear Rating—is the single most important factor in how your car handles on the street versus the track.

But what do these numbers actually mean for your lap times and your wallet? Let’s break it down.

What is a Treadwear Rating?
In simple terms, the Uniform Tire Quality Grading (UTQG) treadwear number tells you how long a tyre should last.

Lower numbers (e.g., 140) mean a softer, stickier compound that grips the road but wears out faster.

Higher numbers (e.g., 240 or 300) mean a harder compound that lasts longer but offers less ultimate "bite" in the corners.

The 140tw: The "softer" Semi-Slick
The Nemesis R140tw is designed for one thing: maximum grip.

Best For: Track days, time attack, and drifting.

The Feel: Once you get some heat into a 140tw tyre, it becomes "gummy." It allows you to brake later and carry significantly more speed through the apex.

The Trade-off: Because the rubber is soft, it won’t last as many heat cycles as a street tyre. If you’re daily driving these, expect to replace them much sooner.

The 240tw: The Ultimate All-Rounder
The Nemesis R240tw is often considered the "sweet spot" for car enthusiasts.

Best For: High-performance daily drivers, street-legal drift cars, and "weekend warriors."

The Feel: You get about 85-90% of the grip of a semi-slick, but with a compound that doesn’t require a massive warmup and can handle a Queensland downpour much better.

The Trade-off: On a dedicated track day, you might find the 240tw starts to "grease up" slightly sooner than a 140tw after several hot laps.

Which one should you buy?
At Skidmark Solutions, we recommend choosing based on your seat time:

If your car lives on a trailer or only comes out for the track: Go with the 140tw. The extra grip will shave seconds off your PB.

If you drive your car to work but want to hit the mountains on Sunday: Go with the 240tw. It’s the perfect balance of longevity and performance.
