Batteries full, but the inverter keeps tripping? 🔌

It's one of the most frustrating problems we hear about. The battery reads fine and the cable is rated for the current, but the inverter still sees low voltage.

That's because it only sees the voltage that actually reaches it. Over a long run, at high current, or through a loose nut, poor crimp or bad earth, 13V at the battery can become 11.5V at the inverter. That's enough to trigger low-voltage protection.

Has this happened in your setup? What turned out to be the culprit? Tell us below 👇

Normally big is better with a lot of things, but not necessarily when it comes to inverters. There's quite a few technacalities you have to understand before you decide on what size inverter to go for. 🔌

Check out Jason's excellent explanation on this.🎙️

Your solar panel says 100W… but how much of that actually makes it to your battery? ☀️

It's not just about the panels. Panel angle, temperature, cabling and your controller all affect how much solar power you actually get to store. A controller running below 90% efficiency can lose more than 10W out of every 100W of solar power before it reaches your battery. A quality MPPT controller running at 98-99% efficiency keeps almost all of it.

Panel, cables, controller and battery all work together. If one part's underperforming, you're leaving power on the table.

What controller are you running? Do you know it's efficiency? Let us know below.

Higher voltage solar: bigger number, better panel? Not exactly ⚡

It's an easy assumption to make, but higher voltage doesn't automatically mean more power. There can be a small efficiency advantage in lower-light conditions (early in the day, late in the day, or with some cloud around), but it's typically only 1-3%.

Not the dramatic jump a lot of people expect.

The voltage that actually benefits you is the one the rest of your system is designed around, not simply the highest number on the box.

What's your take, did you go for higher voltage panels? If so, why?

Not sure what's right for your setup? Send us a message and we'll talk it through with you.

Series or parallel? The answer isn't as simple as you think ⚡

Series wiring gives you higher voltage and the same current, which is useful over long cable runs or on 24V/48V systems, since less current means less voltage loss over distance. Parallel keeps the same voltage but at a higher current, and if one panel gets shaded by an aerial, hatch, aircon unit or a gum tree, the rest of the array keeps working instead of the whole string dropping with it.

Then there's your controller to take into consideration - every solar controller has a maximum PV input voltage, and too many panels in series can push you over it.

So - what's your setup, series or parallel? And why did you go that way? Keen to hear how everyone's rigs are wired.
