A Volvo C70 was in shop recently to have the check engine light diagnosed and fixed.

First step is scanning the vehicle and collecting the fault codes (pic1)

We then move to freeze frame data and look at data parameters at the time the code was set - this can be a very critical part of the diagnostic procedure and often over looked.

Based off the codes we look at the fuel trim data (fuel trims = the amount of fuel the pcm is + or - depending on engine air flow put very simply)

Looking the the fuel trims at idle you can see the fuel is adding over 60% fuel trim (indicating a lean condition, or too much air to fuel ratio) (pic2)

Increasing the rpm to around 3000 shows the fuel trims become alot more respectable (this is an indication of a vacuum leak & would tie in a higher idle rpm code) (pic3)

Now we can leave the driver's seat and get out the smoker tester, we introduce smoke into the engine without the car running to check for air entering the engine from where it shouldn't be (we would see smoke leak externally)

With no external leaks found the next step is checking for internal vacuum leaks we do this by attaching a vacuum gauge to the engine dipstick tube and taking a reading (pic4) seeing anymore than a couple inches of vacuum on any engine is enough to confirm an internal leak.

The culprit in this case is the pcv valve, it's a complete assembly with the oil filter housing. (Pic5)

It was replaced and the old one pulled apart, (check the split in the pcv diaphragm) (pic6)

V8 LandCruiser in for a timing belt kit, it also had a few noisy belt pulley bearings which we replaced while they were all removed!

Everything like the pulleys get checked whilst the engine is apart to avoid doubling up on labour or potential future part failure

The steering was also sloppy on this big girl so the steering rack mount bushes were replaced, this thing is now good to go recover some bogged Navaras 😂

We recently had this BT50 come to us as the car would not crank sometimes!

First we confirmed if power was getting to the starter motor from the relay, which is controlled by the key in this case.

Power was not present at the starter solonoid, we then made our way back to the relay, also no power on the control side of the relay.

Next we checked the ignition switch and confirmed the switch was playing up intermittently, after removing and disassembly of the switch you can see the contacts have completely burnt through a hole!

Replacement of the Ignition switch and this car was fixed, taking a logical and methodical diagnostic approach makes sure this car has the correct parts changed on the first go.

DIAGNOSTIC FEE?!?! -
Sometimes we are asked why this is charged.
Reasons being -
1)the cost we have to output in diagnostic equipment (updates on the scan tool, wear and tear, online subscriptions)
2)we have stay up to date with training (online and in classrooms when covid permits)
3)by diagnosing a car correctly with all the above we can avoid putting in unnecessary parts (bringing the total bill higher)

Toyota Prado KDJ150 - Intake clean!

This prado has just received a major birthday🍰 we removed the EGR cooler & intake manifold. They were both thoroughly cleaned to ensure a quality job, removing the carbon build up can take some time.. the head and intake valves were also chemically cleaned!
The pictures will do all the talking, he is also returning next week to get his catch can installed to help provent this happening again.
The injector compensation values were .3% afterwards giving this Prado a new life😎

VW amarok - the customer had an issue with this amarok alarm going off randomly. Very annoying 😂. After checking out many possible reasons for the siren being set off, we concluded there was likely a battery issue internal in the siren.
After cutting it open we found the battery to be leaking onto the circuit board.
We replaced the siren and the car is fixed.
