We now have the ability to run our rebuilt turbos continuously at working speeds whilst measureing vibration and checking the integrity of seals etc.

What does a Fiat 500 and a 50 cent piece have in common? One of the smallest turbos that I have ever been asked to "Highflow".

Once I was confident that upgraded thrust components could be sourced to handle the extra loads generated by larger wheels and higher boost levels the biggest available compressor was chosen.
Nowdays I usually program the CNC for the machining but due to workholding limitations and the need to undercut the diffuser I chose to go old school and freehand it on the lathe. Somedays 35 years of manual machining pays dividends with a little patience and some dychem with 0.25mm clearance achieved.

This Tomei Armes turbo came into us for a freshen up after a recent rebuild by another turbo rebuilder.
It had suffered from the usual thrust bearing wear ( in and out play) that I have seen on Mitsubishi based turbos since the mid '80s- yep I'm really that ancient.
A strip down confirmed the diagnosis, a standard 13mm thrust washer and bearing had been used on a turbo that has a compressor and turbine wheel that is vastly larger than what the factory parts were ever designed for. Combine that with a rotating assembly that showed no signs of balancing and was 20 times over specification for imbalance when tested!

Upgraded thrust parts were fitted, balanced to 50% of the allowable tolerance and the unit gets to live again.
