⚠️ AN OVERLOOKED HAZARD IN HORSE FLOAT DESIGN!

Some centre dividers have all the fancy features — sliding and adjusting to create different-sized bays.

But there's one important safety feature that can be overlooked.

What's actually stopping the divider from lifting off its pivot points?

A horse pushing upwards against the divider could lift it out of its mounting points, potentially pushing it towards the roof before it drops to the floor.

Now imagine that happening while travelling with horses on board.

🔧 THE FIX?

A simple, locking pin below the pivot point prevents the divider from lifting out of its mounting.

It's a small modification that can make a big difference to horse safety.

After 26 years working on horse floats, it's often the simplest things that deserve a closer look.

😂 YOU WON'T BELIEVE WHAT CRAWLED OUT OF OUR SCRAP BIN! 👀

💧 95 LITRES OF WATER ON BOARD! 🐴

Another handy modification completed at Gidgie Floats!

This horse float came in for a complete water system retrofit.

We fitted a 95L AL-KO water tank with a 12V SHURFO pump.

🔧 Fabricated and fitted mounting brackets, installed the tank, external filler, breather, Anderson plug and pump.

In this video, we take you through the installation, show you how everything is fitted and finish with a demonstration of the system working.

A practical addition for anyone travelling, competing or camping with their horses.

☀️ 4 METRES OF SHADE FOR THIS HORSE FLOAT!

This 5th wheeler horse float came into Gidgie Floats for some repairs following storm damage.

We also fitted a new 4-metre Fiamma awning.

Here's a quick look at winding it out, setting up the support legs and the finished job.

We've fitted plenty of these Fiamma awnings over the years. Good-quality gear, practical and they look smart on a horse float.

A great addition for those long days away competing or camping with your horses.

Check out the size of this redback spider we found living behind a brake drum!

Imagine reaching in there without looking first! 😳

Just another reason to be careful if you're doing a service on your float.

👀 15MM OF BODY FILLER OVER RUST — WOULD YOU CALL THIS A REPAIR?

Someone had previously covered the rusted steel on this horse float with body filler, sanded it back and painted straight over it.

In places, the filler was up to 15mm thick!

The problem? The rust was still there, continuing to eat away at the steel underneath.

We ended up cutting away the lower sections on BOTH sides, repairing the rust around the chassis rails, welding in new steel sheeting and painting the areas that would be hidden behind the kickboards.

There's nothing wrong with a little body filler used correctly.

But piling it over rotten steel and painting over it isn't repairing rust. It's hiding it.

🐴 Would you have expected this much rust to be hiding underneath the paint?

👀 WHEN DID WE START ACCEPTING WORKMANSHIP LIKE THIS

It's a centre divider inside a horse float — right beside the horse.

The upholstery supports were held on with little more than a few tack welds.

Now think about what happens when a 500 kg horse leans against that divider, as it should be able to do.

If it lets go, the sudden movement and noise can spook the horse.

Now you've potentially got a frightened horse inside a confined space, with loose or broken components creating even more hazards.

Horse float interiors aren't just about looking neat.

Anything beside a horse needs to be built to handle a horse.

👀 JUST IMAGINE WHAT THIS IS DOING AT 100 KM/H.

Have a look at how this water-tank shield has been fitted to this horse float.

The front has been TEK SCREWED DIRECTLY INTO THE 45 MM AXLE.

The axle is part of the suspension — it needs to move up and down as the suspension works.

But the other end of the shield is attached to the floor of the horse float.

So every bump in the road has the axle moving while the shield is also fixed to the body of the float.

Now imagine that happening thousands of times travelling down the highway at 100 km/h.

Something has to give.

And that's before we even get into someone drilling Tek screws directly into an axle.

😂 JUST A LITTLE WATER IN THE UPRIGHT…

We drilled into this horse truck upright and thought there might be a bit of water trapped inside.

Well… it just kept coming. 😂💦

And coming…

And coming…

Funny to watch — but there’s a serious side to it.

Water trapped inside steel uprights can sit there unseen and cause corrosion from the inside out.

Another good example of why what you can see on the outside doesn’t always tell you what’s happening inside.
