👀 HOW CLOSE WAS THIS HORSE FLOAT TO LOSING A WHEEL?

This wheel bearing is completely destroyed.

But the damage didn't stop at the bearing.

The failed bearing allowed that much movement that it has:

❌ Damaged the brake drum
❌ Almost completely worn through the retaining washer
❌ Left very little between what you see in this video and the wheel, tyre and brake drum separating from the axle

Not many more rotations and this could have been a very different story.

And that's not something you want happening at 80 km/h with horses on board.

Wheel bearings are one of those parts most people never see — right up until something goes wrong.

This is exactly why regular horse float servicing and bearing inspections matter.

A bearing is cheap.

The damage — and potential consequences — when one fails aren't. 🐴🔧

👀 THIS IS NIGHTMARE STUFF IF YOU'RE A HORSE OWNER...

No horse should ever be standing in, walking up the ramp of, or even be near a horse float with a rear bearer in this condition.

This isn't a little bit of surface rust.
The rear bearer has completely failed from corrosion.

The rear bearer is a structural part of the horse float. It supports the rear of the floor and takes the load every time your horse walks up the ramp and into the float.

Once we removed the floor, you can see just how badly the steel has deteriorated — sections have completely rusted away and what's left has collapsed.

🐴 Imagine a 500–600kg horse stepping onto the back of this floor.

👀 FROM THE OUTSIDE, THIS 5TH WHEELER DIDN'T LOOK TOO BAD...

A bit of rust showing along the edge of sheeting where aluminium edging normally covers.

Most people could look at this and think — sand it back, treat the rust you can see, give it some paint and she'll be right.

Not here at Gidgie floats.

The rust you can see isn't necessarily where the problem started.

Once we removed the sheeting, the real story becomes clear.

The corrosion had started between the sheeting and the steel frame, completely hidden from view, and had been working its way from the inside out.

By the time rust starts showing on the outside, there can already be considerably more happening behind the sheeting.

That's why we're not interested in simply making a horse float look good again.

We'll get back to the cause of the problem, cut out the affected steel, repair the frame properly and only then put it all back together.

🐴🔧 What you can see on the outside can be only a small part of what's happening underneath.

🔧 THIS is why regular horse float servicing and proper safety inspections matter.

This was picked up during a routine service and safety inspection.

One of the bolts securing the coupling was missing its nut completely, while others were loose.

It doesn't look dramatic — but this is the connection between your horse float and your tow vehicle.

And this is exactly the sort of thing that can easily go unnoticed until it becomes a much bigger problem.

A proper horse float service isn't just about checking the wheel bearings and adjusting the brakes.

It all needs to be physically inspected.

Regular servicing and a proper safety inspection aren't optional when you're towing horses — they're a must.

🚛 Something a little different through the Gidgie floats workshop...

This Hino has just had a brand-new tray built, and before the horse box goes on, it came to us to have the floor sorted.

We fitted equine rubber flooring across the complete tray, ready for the next stage of the build.

From here it heads off to have the horse box fitted. 🐴

Horse floats are our bread and butter, but we're always happy to tackle something a little different when it comes to horses.

👀 🔧Think your horse float's ramp is still safe?

From the top, this ramp didn't look too bad...

But once we removed the old rubber, the timber underneath told a very different story.

Rotten timber hidden under ramp rubber is something we find far too often.

This repair included: ✅ New tailgate timber ✅ New ribbed ramp rubber

Your horse float's ramp is one of the highest traffic areas on the entire float, so it's always worth checking its condition.
