Love an old Camry. The 10 series camry was just before my time began in the industry but worked on many of these but the same applies to all Camry models that followed on from here. I still am in awe of how reliable these cars are. You could plan your life around these knowing they just work and could just about forward project financially very safely as far as maintenance planning. Can not say that about many cars today unfortunately!

Toyota Camry's, the 90's cars that Refused To Die. If you grew up in the 90s, chances are you spotted many Camrys back in the day. The 1993 to 1997 Toyota Camry was not flashy, fast, or exciting and that is exactly why it became one of the most successful cars of the decade.

This era was part of the Camry’s golden run. Globally, Toyota was selling well over a million Camrys a year during the mid 90s, and by 1997 the Camry had become the best selling passenger car in the United States. In Australia, these cars were everywhere. Sedans and wagons filled driveways, taxis, fleets, and country roads from the suburbs to the bush.

Back in the mid 90s, a brand new Camry in Australia typically cost around $22,000 to $28,000, depending on the model and whether it was a sedan or wagon. When adjusted for inflation, that is roughly $45,000 to $55,000 in today’s money. These were not cheap cars. They were solid, well built family cars that offered serious value for money.

What made them legendary was not looks or performance. It was reliability. The four cylinder engines were known to run 400,000 to 500,000 kilometres with basic servicing. Automatic gearboxes were near bulletproof. Interiors aged slowly. Plastics held together. Electrics rarely failed. These were cars built before planned obsolescence became the norm.

Fast forward nearly 30 years and you still see them, sometimes it's an old retired owner still rocking the car they got 30 years ago. Parked on the street. Used as learner cars. Quietly doing daily duties without complaint. Many owners joke that the biggest problem with a 90s Camry is that it simply will not die, leaving them with no excuse to replace it.

This generation also locked in Toyota’s reputation for dependable engineering. While other brands chased trends and gimmicks, Toyota focused on consistency, durability, and getting the basics right. It worked.

No turbo. No screens. No drama.
Just cold air con, a smooth ride, and an engine that keeps turning.

Thirty years on, they are still starting first go.
Did your family have a 90s Camry? Sedan or wagon? How many kilometres did it clock up?
