For the 2026 Easter long weekend, double demerits in Western Australia are in effect for five consecutive days from Thursday, 2 April to Monday, 6 April inclusive.
Applicable Offences
In WA, the double demerit system covers a broader range of offences compared to other states.
Points are doubled for:
Speeding: Standard demerits are doubled; for example, speeding by more than 20km/h can result in 12 points instead of 6.
Drink and Drug Driving: All alcohol and drug-related driving offences.
Mobile Phone Use: Illegal use of a mobile phone while driving.
Seatbelts and Child Restraints: Failing to correctly wear a seatbelt or ensure passengers (including children) are restrained.
Running a Red Light: This is a specific addition in WA during double demerit periods.
Speed Camera Evasion: Driving a vehicle fitted with a device to evade speed cameras or driving in a manner to evade detection.
