3 Weeks of M & A 🤝🍻🌏

And for once, it doesn't mean Mergers & Acquisitions! 😆

For the last three weeks, as you've probably noticed from the endless stream of photos, videos, whale shark selfies and suspiciously happy cocktail shots, we've had Mat & Amy onboard Spirit of Ulysses. 🛥️☀️

They flew into Bali with the plan of joining us for our run back towards Darwin, and for Mat, it was a bit of a full-circle moment.

Back in Perth, Mat was a regular crew member aboard Manduco, joining me for the annual run down to Busselton. Looking back now, I have to laugh... that trip was about 100 nautical miles and 4-6 hours long, and I genuinely thought it was a serious boating adventure! 😂

To be fair, at the time it was.

Those trips were some of my favourite weekends of the year. It was our chance to escape, live aboard, tell tall stories, drink a few beers and pretend we were proper adventurers. In many ways, those weekends planted the seeds for the life we're living today.

But enough of the nostalgia before I start sounding old. 👴🍺

What a three weeks it's been.

Together we've swum with whale sharks 🐋, explored remote islands 🏝️, chased sunsets 🌅, encountered wildlife that many people only ever see on documentaries 📺, survived questionable internet connections 📡, discussed every topic known to mankind over late-night drinks 🍻, and created memories that will stick with us for a lifetime.

Unfortunately, reality eventually catches up with all adventures.

Between weather windows 🌬️, Starlink dramas 📡, stabiliser repairs 🔧, schedules, flights, and the small matter of Australia still being a very long way away, we reached the point where we simply couldn't stretch the trip any further.

So the tough decision was made for Mat & Amy to fly home from Labuan Bajo, while the Townend circus continues the final leg back to Darwin. 🎪🇦🇺

(Still missing Gabby enormously by the way 😢❤️)

Their departure got me thinking.

Over the years we've been incredibly lucky to have so many amazing people step aboard our boats. Some we speak to every week, others we might not talk to for months, yet somehow when we reconnect it's like no time has passed at all.

We've shared anchorages, adventures, breakdowns, celebrations, storms, fish stories, sunsets, questionable decisions, and more laughs than I can count.

Every visitor has brought something unique to our journey, and every one of them has left with a little piece of Spirit of Ulysses... and usually a few embarrassing stories about us. 🤣

So this post is really a thank you.

To everyone who has visited us, joined us, supported us, laughed with us, and become part of our story — thank you. ❤️

And to our future visitors...

Our door is always open.

Well... as open as a watertight door can be. 🚪⚓😂

We can't wait to see who climbs aboard next. 🫵🌏🍻

Labaun Bajo Part 2 🌴🐉🦈🚤

What an absolute rollercoaster this chapter has been… the kind with epic highs 🎢, a few “kick-you-directly-in-the-privates” lows 😬, wildlife that shouldn’t even exist, surprise visitors (plural 👀), and a problem-solving mission that honestly deserves its own Netflix series.

So buckle up…

Last time we left you floating around with the absolutely majestic whale sharks 🦈🤯 and I still get goosebumps thinking about that one. Seriously… swimming beside a bus with fins does something to your brain.

From there we ducked into Komodo for a quick overnighter at the lagoon before heading into Labaun Bajo to collect Gabby and Jack from the airport ✈️❤️

Now they weren’t just arriving with smiles and hugs… oh no… they were carrying contraband-level important cargo 📦😂

Our TV lift motor had died in Bali (because apparently televisions also need holidays) and the replacement sent out was completely wrong 🤦‍♂️ The correct one eventually turned up in Australia after we had already left. Perfect timing. Gabby also brought a desperately needed Vacuflush toilet part 🚽 because we had been running on the backup toilet system...

Now let me tell you… when you live on a boat with a family onboard… toilet redundancy suddenly becomes one of life’s most important engineering achievements 🤣

There was no time to waste though. We had a limited window with them, so it was anchors up and straight back to Pink Beach 🩷🏝️

At this point Komodo has basically become our local area. We’re practically tour guides now. We know shortcuts, secret spots and confidently say things like:

“Ah yes, avoid that tourist line… follow us…” 😎

A day full of swimming, beach beers 🍻, sunset hangs and family dinner was exactly what was needed.

But the next day… THIS was the big one.

Komodo Dragons 🐉😳

Yep. Giant carnivorous lizards… can weigh close to 100kg… venomous… can kill you...

What could possibly go wrong?

6am arrives and we’re walking through the village.

Within minutes there’s our first dragon casually sitting on a riverbank like it owns the place.

Meanwhile our guide, completely unfazed, says:

“Oh yes sir… very aggressive in morning… but come closer…”
..followed immediately by...

“Do not wave your hands around though… it may attack.”

EXCUSE ME WHAT?! 😂

Mate, maybe LEAD with that information.

Over the next couple of hours we walked roughly 2km and spotted SEVEN dragons 😳🐉

The guides absolutely did not believe in wasting photo opportunities either. There were moments Amy and I were standing there thinking:

“Are we getting a family photo… or becoming breakfast?” 😅

Kids were edging closer...

Guide smiling...

Parents sweating...

Dragon licking lips...

Perfect 😬😂

Pumped full of adrenaline we headed back to the boat and off toward the lagoon.

Now on the edge of the lagoon sits Manta Point.

We had been trying and trying and TRYING to see mantas with absolutely no luck.

Enter Saldi 😎

Now Saldi has stayed onboard with us since Bali and quietly drops this little nugget:

“Oh sir… I worked with most of the tour operators... they call me when mantas are there.”

WAIT... WHAT?! 😂

You had Manta Hotline™ this whole time?!

BOOM 💥

MANTAS EVERYWHERE 🤿🐟

Absolute magic.

Then...

BOOM 💥💥

And not the good kind.

All the living room circuit breakers exploded into life.

Reset.

Trip.

Reset.

Trip again.

Inverters dropped out.

Then silence.

I went to bed thinking maybe it was one of those random boat moments...

The next morning...

No internet.

NO INTERNET 😳

Now Starlink has been basically flawless for nearly FOUR YEARS.

I think this time it looked at us and said:

“Hold my beer.” 🍺😂

Now I wasn’t worried for Facebook... definitely not doom scrolling either... absolutely not 👀🤣

But Starlink is our weather, our communication and our offshore lifeline.

Now we had... nothing.

Step forward once again...

Saldi.

“I call my friend.”

Within TWO HOURS we had a local “Starlink guy” standing onboard looking at the system.

His diagnosis?

Exactly what I thought.

Main power supply had shorted ⚡

Problem:

No Starlink units in Labaun Bajo.

Maybe Jakarta.

Maybe not.

Language barriers.

Supply issues.

Cue years of remote work problem solving kicking in 😎

Within two hours I had someone willing to race to JB Hi-Fi and buy a complete unit 🏃‍♂️

Within one day I found someone travelling to Labaun Bajo ✈️

Within three days Jamie stepped onboard carrying a brand new Starlink system 😂

We no longer operate boats.

We specialize in solutions 🤣🤣

Even better...

Jamie flew IN on the same plane Gabby and Jack flew OUT on.

Same airport.

Same timing.

Same driver.

Maximum efficiency 🤣

Since Jamie had made the effort, it was our turn to play tour guide again.

Back around we went...

Pink Beach 🩷

Mantas 🤿

Dragons 🐉

The whole Komodo greatest hits tour 😂

Then eventually back to town for a great dinner at Smoke House 🍖 and time to say goodbye.

Honestly...

This place is absolutely EPIC.

Completely insane.

Wildlife, chaos, beauty, dragons, mantas, broken boats and miracle logistics...

Exactly the kind of place we seem to accidentally thrive in 😂❤️

🌴 BALI ➡️ LABUAN BAJO (Part 1) 🌴

I genuinely struggled writing this update… and if you know me, that doesn’t happen often 😳😂

This one is SO massive, my brain is basically running at generator overload. There’s been so much happening that I’m worried I won’t get it across properly. We’ve had Amy & Mat join us from Bali, hopefully all the way back to Darwin, and let’s just say this leg has delivered a VERY healthy mix of adventure, excitement, sleep deprivation and "how is this our life?" moments 🤯⚓

To help myself, here’s just SOME of what happened…

☑️ Gili Air
☑️ Party Island 🍻
☑️ WHALE SHARKS 🦈😳

…and honestly, I’ve left out almost as much as I included.

Right… here we go 👇

We departed Bali and immediately got punched in the face by some serious head current 🌊😅 But after pushing through we managed to sneak into Gili Air in daylight.

Now being seasoned professionals (self-awarded title), we were ONTO IT this time.

Scooters? Booked ahead ✔️ Charged? Triple checked ✔️😂 No repeat of our previous electric scooter range anxiety incident…

We loaded Amy & Mat up and did laps around the island, snorkelled with turtles 🐢, ate like absolute kings 🍔🍤🍺 and generally behaved like people with very little self-control around food.

Then one of those random cruising moments happened…

After months and months of crossing paths by only a few hundred miles here and there, our friends Phil & Jane from Raja finally crossed paths with us for real! 🙌 Along with Simon & Phillipa we all had a great dinner together and somehow picked up exactly where we'd left off.

One of the coolest parts of this lifestyle… your mates can literally appear in different countries 🌏⚓

But while Gili was amazing... we were secretly itching to move.

Because next stop…

🦈 WHALE SHARKS.

Well...

Unfortunately… 😏

🍻 PARTY ISLAND stood in our way.

Tough life.

We departed at first light and made good time toward Party Island.

Now this is where I started asking questions about myself…

As we rounded the headland I got a message from the bar manager…

The SECOND he saw our boat appear 🤣🤣

The second.

Not after anchoring.

Not after tendering ashore.

Not after arriving.

No no...

Silhouette over the headland.

Message received.

Do I have a problem? Don’t answer that 😅🍻

We tendered ashore, said our hellos and promised ourselves "just a couple of drinks."

Which as every boatie knows translates directly into:

"We’ll see." 😂

But we behaved ourselves(ish)… because the following morning was time to get to the whaleshark spot.

Sumbawa.

Whale sharks.

4am alarm.

No excuses.

This wasn't just another stop.

We’d been hearing stories from friends for months. Some had hit the jackpot, others completely missed them due to moon phases and conditions. Our guide Phonky had actually been chatting with us for months after we narrowly missed them previously.

This time he was adamant:

"Not happening again."

At 4am the following morning there was movement everywhere.

Kids buzzing.

Adults pretending to be calm but absolutely not calm 😅

Phonky arrived in his traditional wooden boat loaded with blankets, pillows and what may be the greatest breakfast package in marine tourism history…

🍌 Bananas
🍞 Bread
☕ Sleep deprivation

We settled in for the hour-and-a-half ride through darkness toward the fishing platforms.

These wooden boats spend the night catching krill. We arrived before sunrise and watched them begin tossing cups of krill overboard.

Then out of the darkness...

Shapes.

Huge dark shadows.

Slow.

Massive.

Silent.

Suddenly these giant mysterious creatures began appearing beneath us 😳🦈

As soon as the sun lifted enough...

Phonky simply yelled:

"JUMP IN!"

No discussion.

No countdown.

No risk assessment.

Just...

JUMP 😂

Within seconds we were in the water surrounded by TWO enormous whale sharks.

Absolute giants.

Peacefully circling us.

Effortlessly gliding around while topping up on krill.

Hearts racing.

Kids screaming through snorkels.

Adults trying to act cool while internally malfunctioning 🤯

And then more arrived...

At one stage we had FOUR whale sharks around us.

FOUR.

For over two hours we swam with them while Phonky somehow became underwater photographer, shark wrangler and child collector all at once 📸😂

Honestly… words don't do this one justice.

Heading back to Spirit of Ulysses we all just sat there staring at each other asking:

"Did that actually happen?"

Because it genuinely didn’t feel real.

Still completely buzzing from that experience we pointed the bow toward an overnight passage back to Labuan Bajo 🌙⚓

Quick stop at the lagoon…

Then into town.

WHY?

Because GABBY & JACK are inbound!!!! 🎉❤️

And somehow the adventure meter just got turned up AGAIN…

Stay tuned 😏
