Jeep Compass Limited 2013

Customer Concern:
Customer states that the vehicle intermittently fails to start and produces a clicking noise when attempting to start the engine. The starter motor was reportedly replaced approximately one month ago by another workshop.

Inspection / Diagnosis:
During inspection, we found that the starter motor power-supply to starter motor terminal nut was loose, resulting in a poor electrical connection. We securely retightened the nut and the starter motor was refitted.

Further testing identified an intermittent internal fault with the starter motor Bendix drive/solenoid assembly. During the no-start condition, the starter motor would not operate correctly; however, lightly tapping the starter motor Bendix drive solenoid housing caused it to operate immediately.

Conclusion / Recommendation:
The test results indicate that the recently replaced starter motor has an intermittent internal Bendix drive solenoid fault. We recommend replacing the starter motor assembly to rectify the intermittent no-start condition and prevent further starting issues.
(The part should be under warranty and need to bring it back to the workshop who replaced it)
