🚗 The $120 Mistake Many Learner Drivers Make
Something I see quite often as a driving instructor…
A learner books their PDA driving test before they’re actually ready.
Usually the thinking is:
"Let’s just see how they go."
But here’s the reality 👇
If the test isn’t passed, the Department of Transport fee to rebook is $120.50.
And most learners then need more practice hours before attempting again.
So that “practice test” can quickly become one of the most expensive driving lessons you’ll ever have.

What The PDA Is Actually Testing
The PDA isn’t just about driving safely.
Assessors are watching for very specific skills:
✔ observation routines✔ correct head checks✔ safe gap selection✔ controlled lane changes✔ hazard awareness✔ calm decision making under pressure
Most learners who fail aren’t unsafe drivers.
They simply weren’t taught how the test is assessed.

A Resource I Recommend to Every Student
The Department of Transport actually has a great video explaining the PDA driving assessment process.
It’s one I encourage all learners and parents to watch.
Understanding what the assessor is looking for makes the test feel far less mysterious and much less stressful.

A Quick Tip Before Booking A Test
Before locking in a PDA, ask yourself:
Can your learner confidently:
• perform head checks without prompting• manage roundabouts calmly• merge safely into traffic• drive without constant coaching
** Will my Learner drive in a way that doesn’t rely upon other drivers cutting them some slack because of the Yellow L plate (because they don’t drive with an L plate on test day).
If the answer is “almost”, a few focused lessons can save a lot of stress — and a lot of money.

📅 With school holidays approaching, many learners use the break to build confidence and fine-tune the final skills needed for their PDA.
If your learner driver is getting close to test readiness, feel free to message to check lesson availability.
Stay safe on the roads.

🚗 When Fuel Prices Rise… Smart Families Change Strategy
Fuel in Perth touched $2.79 per litre this week, and many people are expecting it to climb closer to $3.00.
For families in Joondalup and the northern suburbs, that adds up quickly.
When costs rise, the first instinct is often to cut things out.
Sometimes driving lessons end up on that list.
But here’s something worth thinking about 👇
Sometimes the smarter move isn’t cutting costs. It’s putting your money where it actually saves you more in the long run.

📉 The Hidden Cost of “Free” Practice
A typical 1-hour practice drive in the family car can mean:
⛽ 40–50km of driving⛽ $12–$15 in fuel🔧 extra wear on tyres, brakes and servicing😬 a stressful learning environment for both parent and teen
And for many learners — especially those with nerves,ADHD, anxiety or low confidence — stress actually slows progress down.

🌟 The SafeR Driving Difference
At SafeR Driving, lessons are designed to be focused and purposeful and chill.
We don’t just drive around clocking up hours.
Each lesson targets the skills needed to pass the PDA driving assessment confidently and safely.
Why does that matter?
Because every failed driving test currently costs $120.50 with the Department of Transport — not including the extra time and practice needed to try again.
Preparing properly the first time can save families weeks of extra driving and re-testing.

👩‍⚕️ A Different Style of Driving Instructor
SafeR Driving is a nurse-led, trauma-informed driving school.
That means I help learners manage:
✔ nerves and test anxiety✔ attention challenges✔ confidence behind the wheel✔ real-world decision making
Lessons are delivered in a dual-controlled 2025 Mazda CX-3 for extra safety and peace of mind.
I’m also DOT WA certified, which means I have to pass the same driving standards I teach.

🗓 Why School Holidays Are a Great Time to Learn
With school holidays and Easter approaching, many learners finally have the time to focus on driving.
Fewer school runs, less routine pressure, and more flexible daytime lesson slots often means faster progress.
Sometimes a short block of holiday lessons can make the difference between almost ready and P-plate ready.

💬 Keeping Lessons Accessible
I know the cost-of-living pressure families are under.
That’s why I’m holding my lesson rate at $90 per hour (inc. GST).
My goal has always been simple:
Help young drivers become safe, confident and test-ready the first time.

📩 If your learner driver is heading into the school holidays and wants to make real progress, feel free to message to check availability - school holidays will have more spots available.
Stay safe on the roads everyone.
