There's just no excuse: no one should be using their phone while driving.
It's reckless, it's dangerous, and it's costing lives.
But we still see too many reports of it happening on our roads - so we're taking action.
Starting 1 July, we're introducing a new aggravated offence, which will apply to drivers caught texting, browsing or watching videos.
That will earn them 4 demerit points and a $1000 fine, one of the toughest penalties in the country.
Drivers caught touching their phones at a traffic light or talking on the phone while holding the handset will incur a penalty of 3 demerit points and a $500 fine, $100 more than the existing penalty.
These new laws might be tough, but if they help save even one life, they will be worth it.
