New rules regarding mobiles and other devices

Using a device while driving can cause you to crash. From 31 March 2023, new road rules will extend existing mobile phone rules to include:
• inbuilt systems
• mounted devices
• wearable and portable devices, like smartwatches and tablets.
These new changes will help to minimise distractions on the road.

If you don't know and understand where the blind spots are please ask your instructor to show you.

Rear-view mirrors only show a little bit of what’s going on. Using side mirrors and doing a head check helps you figure out if there’s someone in your blind spot!

Be really conscious of how different the weather and road conditions are on the colder winter mornings and always drive to the conditions

Transparent, sneaky, and hard to see, black ice can be a real danger on roads in winter.

If you’re travelling through areas prone to black ice, remember to drive slowly, pay attention to the road & leave your headlights on. For more winter driving tips visit: https://go.vic.gov.au/J9G9HU

It's getting towards the time of year to get your night hours up

With winter on the way it's getting dark earlier, making it the perfect time to get some night hours up with your learner! Although logging 20 is the minimum, you should aim to get as many hours as possible driving at night so your learner is ready to drive safely on their own. Here's a copy of an email from VicRoads about the Hazard Perception Test.

I am happy to let everyone know that THE HAZARD TEST HAS GONE ONLINE!

The Hazard Test (HPTO) went live on the 28th September and those of you with a myVicroads Account, you may have received an email already about it.

About the HPTO

The Hazard Perception Test assesses an applicant’s ability to recognise and respond to potential hazards in the safest way possible and features scenarios that focus on areas where young and novice drivers are more likely to experience a crash. The HPTO means applicants have an alternative channel to take the test online through their myVicRoads account.

The HPTO provides applicants:

an interactive learning experience with driving scenarios that simulate real life hazards they wouldn’t normally encounter as part of their Drive Test. impacted by COVID-19 with an alternative and online way to complete the test without visiting a centre or waiting to re-book their appointment. the ability to self-register and pay the test fee online. the comfort of being able to take the test in their own home, or any location of choice. the ability to practice online as many times as they need before taking the test. the ability to access and take the test at a time of their choosing, from any compatible device through their myVicRoads personal account. a more seamless and complete digital experience in the overall customer journey transitioning from the Learner Permit Test Online (LPTO) and myLearners. A COVIDsafe approach, by limiting physical and face-to-face interaction with others.

Outside of COVID-19 restriction periods, applicants can still choose to sit the Hazard Perception Test In-person at VicRoads Customer Service Centres, if they require interpreter or translator services support or don’t have access to a compatible device or internet. The practice test is still available, free of charge, for applicants to access on our website
