A ferry renewal should not begin as a length-for-length replacement.

Two vessels can share a similar overall length and deliver very different outcomes once the real route is considered: passenger flow, peak demand, turnaround time, berth geometry, weather exposure, accessibility, crew workload, maintainability and future energy options.

That is the useful conversation around a 36.7 m or 40.5 m catamaran platform. The question is not simply which vessel is bigger. It is which configuration gives the operator the right balance of capacity, service frequency, resilience and lifecycle cost.

Class approval does not begin when the drawings are finished.

The most reliable projects bring the rule framework, flag requirements and approval path into the concept stage while the general arrangement, structure, stability and systems are still able to move without expensive rework.

Our preferred sequence is straightforward:

1. Define the mission and operating profile.

2. Map the applicable class, statutory and flag requirements.

3. Close the major weight, stability and arrangement decisions.

4. Control interfaces between structure, machinery, electrical, safety and digital systems.

5. Maintain one clear build-state configuration as the design develops.

That discipline is not paperwork around the engineering. It is part of the engineering and it protects schedule, cost and confidence on the shop floor.

The offshore wind O&M question is changing.
It is no longer only: Can a vessel reach the site?
It is: Can the vessel deliver safe, productive technician transfers across a harder operating envelope with longer transits, more weather exposure, tighter emissions expectations and decades of maintenance demand?

Global offshore wind capacity reached 92.5 GW at the end of 2025. Every new turbine is also a long-term access commitment. For operators reviewing an ageing O&M fleet, the replacement brief should therefore begin with the mission profile, not the headline speed.

We would put five questions at the front of that brief: route length; transfer conditions; technician comfort; payload and deck workflow; and the port or charging infrastructure available today and later.

A weather window opens.

Twenty-four technicians are ready. Tools, replacement parts and critical equipment are waiting at the port. Offshore, maintenance work must continue.

Nine months of radio silence... definitely not our finest social media work. 😅

But there’s a good reason for it: we’ve been heads-down designing. Those nine months resulted in five brand-new vessel concepts.
