⚠️ THE REAL DANGER OF OVERLOADING YOUR VEHICLE ⚠️
Here’s a clear reminder of why towing and payload limits exist.
This clutch came out of a Mitsubishi Triton that was pushed far beyond its limits—towing way too much weight while carrying a heavy load in the tray at the same time.
The result? Absolute catastrophe.
The Clutch Exploded: Under extreme friction and heat, the clutch friction material completely disintegrated and welded itself directly to the pressure plate.
Flywheel Heat Damage: The extreme temperatures caused heavy heat fractures across the flywheel face (visible in the second photo), rendering it completely unsafe and beyond repair.
Fire Hazard: Temperatures got so extreme inside the bellhousing that this clutch easily could have caught fire. An engine bay or underbody fire at highway speeds is a massive safety hazard for everyone on the road.
Key Takeaways for Towing Safely:
Know Your GCM (Gross Combined Mass): Adding a heavy load to your ute’s tray directly reduces how much you can legally (and safely) tow behind it.
Listen to the Warning Signs: Slipping, high revs without acceleration, or a burning smell means friction components are overheating. Stop before catastrophic failure happens.
Upgrade if Needed: If you regularly tow near your vehicle’s limit, consider a heavy-duty clutch upgrade designed to manage higher thermal loads.
Don't risk a dangerous breakdown, a vehicle fire, or an expensive repair bill. Double-check your weights before setting off! 🚛💨
