Keep this in mind so you don’t get caught out unknowingly

One simple question about the correct way to proceed through an intersection has left some drivers seriously confused.

17/09/2019

From 26 September, motorists will no longer need to slow down to 40km/h on roads with speed limits of 90km/h or more when passing stationary emergency vehicles with flashing lights. Drivers will need to slow down safely and move over to give them as much space as possible. In speed zones of 80km/h or less, motorists will still need to slow down to 40km/h.

The rule will also be expanded to include stationary tow trucks and breakdown assistance vehicles displaying yellow flashing lights.

Wild winter weather brings more snow storms so this is a great reminder driving in the snow....

Roads & Maritime Services have advised that there is heavy traffic on all Alpine Roads, and to expect delays. With the Bureau of Meteorology now forecasting snow down to 400m tomorrow (Saturday), snow may fall in areas where it is not often seen. Everyone is reminded to slow down and drive to the conditions - roads are likely to be slippery. We also remind drivers that:

"All 2-wheel drive (2WD) vehicles entering Kosciuszko National Park between the June and October long weekends, must carry snow chains (you’ll be fined if you’re caught without them).

You must also carry snow chains on the following roads:
- Kosciuszko Road from the Kosciuszko National Park boundary at Thredbo River to Perisher Valley
- Alpine Way between Thredbo and Tom Groggin, and Island Bend/Guthega Road for its full length
- Snow chains are also recommended to be carried on Alpine Way between Jindabyne and Thredbo, and on the Snowy Mountains Highway.

While 4-Wheel Drive (4WD) and All Wheel Drive (AWD) vehicles do not require chains, you should carry them in winter if you lack experience driving on ice and snow. You may need them in the event of extreme weather conditions. Vehicles fitted with ‘winter tyres’ are not required to fit chains.

You’ll need to fit your snow chains correctly because the New South Wales (NSW) Police Force and other authorised officers may conduct regular chain inspections."

Heading to the snow?

It’s important that snow chains are carried and used if required. Heavy fines of over $300 can be issued.

All 2WD vehicles will need to carry snow chains between the June and October long weekends on the following roads:

-Kosciuszko Road from the park boundary at Thredbo River (onto Perisher Valley).
-Alpine Way between Thredbo and Tom Groggin.
—Island Bend/Guthega Road for its full length

Snow chains are also recommended to be carried on Alpine Way between Jindabyne and Thredbo, and on Snowy Mountains Highway.

The road from Khancoban to Cabramurra and many of Kosciuszko National Park's minor roads are closed in winter.

While snow chains are not compulsory for 4WD and AWD vehicles, it's recommended you carry them during winter, especially if you're not used to driving on alpine roads affected by snow and ice.
