DON'T GET CAUGHT OUT IN THE COLD WITH A BATTERY THAT WON'T START.
With the onset of the cooler months its a testing time for your battery’s cranking capability. If your vehicle is slow to start its time to act before you get caught out
Why Batteries fail…
Batteries have a limited life which can be reduced or extended by the application, maintenance and operating conditions.
There are two unmistakable categories
Manufacturing...
If a manufacturing fault it usually happens within 3 months
Short circuit or dead cell
Internal break usually caused by mishandling
Non manufacturing...
Discharge – lights left on
Incorrect application – undersize fitment leads to early failure
Neglect – lack of maintenance
Over or under charging
Sulphation – battery left on discharge state for an extended period
Batteries age – when a battery is beyond its warranty period you must expect sooner or later it needs replacement. Operations in high temperatures speed up early failure.
Exploding batteries – during operations batteries emit a volatile gas which can easily be ignited with a spark or short circuit. The connecting of jumper leads can cause a spark igniting the gas which may lead to a battery explosion
Battery Care and Maintenance…
Routine inspection every month or two will help maximise your battery’s life
Inspect the battery terminals, clamps and cables for loose or damaged connections
Battery connection should be free of corrosion and tight using a thin coating of grease to ward off corrosion
Keep battery top clean and dry to prevent discharge between terminals
Maintain the electrolyte level above the plates with distilled water
Battery testing...
At home you can test the battery with a hydrometer or voltmeter and charge where necessary
Once your warranty has expired you need to regularly use 4WD Obsessions free battery testing service to check for the battery’s load capacity
The regular driver of a vehicle should be on the look out for any change in the battery’s condition when starting the vehicle especially with the head lights on
Batteries not fixed in a cradle and vibrating will suffer premature failure.
