Wheel speed sensing at the wheel, not the driveshaft. Measure inboard and everything between the sensor and the tyre ends up in the measurement: the driveshaft winds up under braking load like the torsion spring it is, spline and diff lash get driven back and forth as the ABS cycles pressure, and the sensor gap moves with all of it. Wheel speed sensing needs that gap held inside a narrow band — vary it enough and the signal drops out, or returns a speed the system can't reconcile with the other three wheels. A motorsport ABS doesn't guess at that point: it declares a sensor fault, lights the lamp and takes itself offline, usually in the hardest braking of the day. Back in the paddock every sensor tests fine on a rolling wheel, because nothing is broken — the measuring point just moves.
