Here’s What You Need to Know
June 30th 2023, is the deadline to register any trailer, camper, or caravan (under 4.5 tonnes) that is currently unregistered. After this date, all unregistered trailers must meet strict certification requirements under the new legislation in order to be sold or registered in Australia.
The new Road Vehicle Standards legislation was implemented by the Australian Government for light trailers from July 1st, 2021, replacing the Motor Vehicle Standards Act 1989. This new legislation requires manufacturers and importers of light trailers to obtain approval before providing them to the Australian market.
What this means is that until June 30th, 2023, low-volume suppliers can continue to provide light trailers in accordance with the existing process. However, after this date, all light trailers never previously registered in Australia must meet the new Road Vehicle Standards legislation requirements.
In other words, as of July 1st, 2023 it’s mandatory for all light trailers to have an entry in the Register of Approved Vehicles (RAV) in order to be eligible for registration or sale in Australia.
Don’t Delay - Take Action Now!
If you're in the process of building a trailer, camper, or caravan, it's essential to complete your build and register it by June 30th, 2023. If you're a manufacturer or importer of light trailers, it's crucial to be aware that Low Volume VIN trailer plates will no longer be compliant and available for use or sale from July 1st, 2023.
Ultimately, these changes mean that all unregistered trailers, campers, and caravans must meet the certification requirements under the new legislation in order to be sold or registered in the country. It's vital for DIY builders, manufacturers, and importers of light trailers to be aware of these changes and take necessary actions to comply with these new laws.
