In a move no one saw coming, Mercedes-Benz is preparing to source engines from BMW starting in 2027. Reports suggest Mercedes will adopt BMW’s 2.0L B48 turbo engine, known for its modular design and hybrid compatibility, to power upcoming models like the CLA, GLA, GLB, C-Class, and even the new “Little G” off-roader.

The surprising collaboration comes as Mercedes faces tariff and technical issues with its own new engine lineup. For BMW, the deal means higher production volumes and the bragging rights of powering its fiercest rival. For Mercedes, it’s about meeting Euro 7 standards, cutting R&D costs, and expanding its plug-in hybrid offerings.
