Distributor re-curving and graphing. I’ll stand by this simple statement. When it comes to street engines and drive ability, good idle and starting…..I get most of my results from the ignition system first. Of course a decent spark and a good voltage at the spark plug is essential, but giving the engine the right static ignition timing and correct total amount at a determined rpm…yields most of the advantages to any tune up. Here I have welded up both the start and the stop to the original factory implemented curve, to dramatically reduce total advance, so that I can run a lot more initial timing at idle, but still not over advance for a good top end and over exert or harm the engine. Too many factors are so important when it comes to the actual total timing any engine likes or requires, and I have always been conservative when choosing this. Even 2 or so degrees of over advance, may not be heard in audible “pinging” or knocking, but this is detrimental to longevity of most critical engine components and head gaskets often are compromised by excessive combustion pressure due to excessive timing. When optimised, starting and overall performance is hugely improved. So much more than getting the fuel mixtures correct alone.
