I had the opportunity to teach at Flinders University in the Occupational Therapy Driver Assessment and Rehabilitation short course yesterday and today.

There is something genuinely energising about helping the next cohort of OT driver assessors come through. Driver assessment and rehabilitation is such a unique area of occupational therapy. It sits at the intersection of clinical reasoning, road safety, independence, dignity, risk, family dynamics, regulation, cognition, disability access and participation.

That is exactly why I love it.

For many people, driving and community mobility are not just about getting from A to B. They are about work, study, health appointments, parenting, friendships, confidence and staying connected to life.

Helping OTs build the skills, judgement and confidence to work in this space is a real privilege. It also matters, because Australia needs more well-trained OT driver assessors who understand both the clinical and human side of mobility.

A big thank you to Flinders University for the opportunity to be involved.

PS: I tried not to get too over the top and too excited about vehicle modifications, but I couldn't help it! 😅

We’re heading to OT Exchange Brisbane 2026!

I’m proud to be presenting alongside Jenny and Chris as we share two sessions focused on what sits at the heart of so much of our work at Williams OT, helping people move, drive and participate with greater independence.

Together, we’ll be presenting:
Back in the Driver’s Seat, Rehabilitation Beyond the Assessment
and
The Real Cost of Community Mobility, Why Driving Independence is About More than the Cost of Assessment

These conversations matter.

Driving and community mobility are not just about transport. They are about access to work, health care, family life, social connection, identity, dignity and choice.

I’ll also be pitching the Drive With Me program, our parent and learner driver education program designed to better support young people with Autism, ADHD, anxiety and learning differences as they prepare for driving.

It is exciting to take these ideas to a national OT audience and contribute to the broader conversation about mobility, independence and participation.

Looking forward to connecting, learning and hopefully challenging the thinking a little too.

Last night, Williams OT had the privilege of attending Government House to meet Her Excellency the Honourable Frances Adamson AC, Governor of South Australia.

We were invited in recognition of our ongoing support of road safety and The Get Home Safe Foundation, whose work continues to highlight the importance of helping every person get home safely.

At Williams OT, road safety is not just about vehicles, licences or assessments. It is about people, families, independence and responsibility.

We are proud to support initiatives that keep road safety front and centre in our community, and grateful for the opportunity to stand alongside others who are working to reduce road trauma across South Australia.

Thank you to The Get Home Safe Foundation for your continued leadership and to Government House for recognising the importance of this work.

Also, great to catch up with Trevor, one of our original driving instructors. Such a wonderful human being. Bonus 😄

Vehicle access solutions look different for everyone and are often tailored to individual needs and goals. The assessment starts with getting to know you and what you use a car for, and then we can assist with vehicle selection, wheelchair fit and prescription, and getting the right equipment into the vehicle to make your daily life more spontaneous, more independent and safer.

🚘 What happens in a driving assessment?

A driving assessment helps understand how a person manages driving tasks in a safe and supportive way.

It may include a discussion about driving history and goals, a clinical assessment, and an on-road assessment where appropriate.

The focus is on understanding strengths and identifying what supports may help moving forward. So, although there might be some anxiety about being "tested", an assessment is different to a test. An assessment is really looking for a way that we can help and be of assistance and how we can help.
