This may include mobility equipment, seating supports, ramps, or transfer aids, depending on a person’s needs and goals.

The right setup is often about fit for the person, their home, and their daily routines.

🚗 Getting in and out of a vehicle, or managing driving controls, can feel different for everyone.

For some people, vehicle modifications such as hand controls, swivel seats, or wheelchair hoists may help support comfort, safety, and continued participation in everyday travel.

What works well often depends on the person, their routine, and the environments they travel in.

If you or someone you know is exploring driving supports, referrals can be submitted through https://www.williamsot.com/referral-form/

🚘 Driving is about more than getting from one place to another.
For many people, it can help with independence, work opportunities, social connection, and participating in the community.

Some individuals may benefit from additional support when learning or returning to driving, particularly after injury, illness, or changes in function.
A full driving assessment can help understanding strengths, challenges, and goals to help support safe driving where possible.

If you know someone working towards their driving goals, referrals can be submitted through https://www.williamsot.com/referral-form/

As part of Volunteer Recognition Week (18-24 May), we want to recognise the incredible parents, carers and support people who give their time, patience and energy to help young drivers with disabilities learn to drive.

Learning to drive can take courage, repetition, emotional support and a whole team behind the scenes. For many young people, the person sitting beside them in the passenger seat plays a huge role in helping them build confidence, practise safely and keep going when things feel hard.

To every parent, carer and support person who has sat through the nervous first drives, the quiet car park practice, the tricky conversations, the repeated instructions, the celebrations and the setbacks, thank you.

Your support helps create more than safer drivers. It helps create confidence, independence and possibility.

At Williams OT, we see the difference you make. And it matters. 🚗

Driving is about more than steering, pedals, and road rules.

We’re currently supporting a family whose autistic teen found it difficult to build a visual map of their local area. Instead of seeing places spatially, they organised locations in a straight line based on distance from home making something as simple as driving home from the shops incredibly challenging.

These are the kinds of challenges traditional driving lessons often don’t address.

At Williams OT together with the Drive with Me program, we help families help their teens with autism build practical strategies that support safe, confident, independent driving.
