2011 Volkswagen Golf – Previous Wiring Damage Found

While investigating this Golf’s low-power and limp-mode faults, we found signs of previous damage and repairs to the engine wiring loom.

Sections had been retaped, several plugs weren’t properly secured and there was excess solder near the alternator. A fuel-rail bracket fastener also appeared to have shorted. At least one intake-manifold fastener was loose.

The intake-manifold bolts should be retensioned before smoke-testing the intake for leaks. The main recommendation is to fit a good replacement engine wiring loom, then continue diagnosis if any faults remain. The traction-control button is also broken.

Toyota Hilux – Stalled and Wouldn’t Restart

This Hilux came in after stalling and refusing to start.
Despite the fuel gauge showing roughly a quarter of a tank, we found there was no fuel in the vehicle. We added 20 litres of diesel and it started and drove satisfactorily.
The incorrect gauge reading points towards a possible fuel-gauge or instrument-cluster issue, which still needs attention.

The Hilux is also due for its 300,000-kilometre service. A brake shudder was noted, with newer pads appearing to have been fitted against the old rotors. Machining the front rotors is recommended.

2012 Toyota Camry – Service and Safety Inspection

This Camry came in for a service, with a reported hesitation or lag also noted. The spark plugs and ignition coils had already been replaced before this visit, and the job notes don’t record the hesitation being confirmed or repaired.

We completed the scheduled service, rotated the tyres and replaced the brake fluid.
During the inspection, we found the front lower control-arm bushes were split. The drive-belt tensioner pulley was also noisy. Both items are recommended for replacement at the next service rather than being left to deteriorate further.

2011 Volkswagen Golf – Low Power and Multiple Fault Codes

This Golf came in with low power, limp mode and several warning lights on the dash.
The scan showed numerous faults involving short circuits, lost communication and implausible sensor signals. With so many unrelated faults appearing together, the next step was to inspect the wiring shared by those systems.
The vehicle’s history and the condition of the engine bay suggested the intake manifold had previously been removed and the wiring loom had been disturbed. At this stage, there wasn’t enough consistent sensor information to make a reliable diagnosis of the reported turbo concern.

2014 Ford Ranger – Testing an Erratic Temperature Fault

The easy answer was a faulty thermostat. The test said otherwise.

This Ranger's temperature gauge would warm up and then drop back, so we pulled the thermostat and tested it out of the vehicle. The video shows heat being applied while its opening point and temperature are monitored. It tested correctly, which meant the fault was somewhere else.

Further inspection found a broken bypass valve in the rear thermostat housing and the wrong temperature sensor fitted. We replaced the complete housing assembly. After extended running and road testing, the temperature held steady at around 89 to 90 degrees.

2008 Ford Falcon – Rear Shocks and Sway-Bar Links Replaced

Here's the fix for the Falcon with the noisy rear end.

We replaced both leaking rear shock absorbers and the rear sway-bar links, which had lost their bushes entirely. The sway-bar D bushes were greased and the left-rear ABS wiring secured so it can't rub on the tyre again. The road test confirmed the main rear suspension noises were gone.

The front tyres have inner-edge wear and are a different size to the rears. Once the remaining worn suspension joints are repaired, we've recommended matching the tyre sizes and doing a wheel alignment.

2016 Hyundai Tucson – Excessive Timing Chain Slack

A timing chain should not move like this.

This Tucson came in with a misfire caused by damaged ignition-coil wiring and failed coils. While replacing the leaking rocker cover gasket we got a clear view of the chain, and the video shows how much movement there was when it was checked by hand.

There was no excessive chain noise on the road test, but this much slack needs urgent further investigation. More dismantling will be needed to properly assess the timing components, and a timing-chain kit may be required. A chain that lets go doesn't give a second warning.

2007 BMW – Rear Door Window Regulator Replacement

From the outside, a window that won't go up looks like a five-minute job. It isn't.

This BMW came in with the left-rear window not working. The regulator had failed, so the door trim and associated components had to come off to reach it. We removed the faulty regulator, fitted the customer-supplied replacement and reassembled the door.

The photos show the regulator mechanism inside the door and how much has to come apart to get to it.

2008 Ford Falcon – Worn Rear Shock Absorber

A good shock absorber resists when you push it. Watch this one.

This Falcon came in with a squeak and a knock from the rear suspension. Both rear shocks were leaking and the rear sway-bar links were missing their bushes. The video shows one of the removed shocks being checked by hand.

Both shocks and the sway-bar links were replaced, the sway-bar D bushes greased, and the ABS wiring that had been rubbing on the left-rear tyre secured. The main rear suspension noises were gone on the road test.

Worn shocks don't just make noise. They add to braking distance and let the car wander in corners.

2018 Hyundai i30 Go – Starting Concern and Front Brakes

Intermittent faults are the hardest kind to pin down, and this one didn't show up while the car was here.

This i30 came in with an intermittent starting problem. It would sometimes just click instead of cranking, particularly when cold. The fault didn't occur while the vehicle was with us. The battery tested at full health and the alternator was charging at 14.3 volts. The symptoms point towards a starter-motor issue, but it needs to be reproduced or monitored before we confirm that rather than guess.

The front brake pads were low and the rotors had developed a large lip. We replaced the front pads and rotors and road-tested the i30 with a good result.

If your car ever clicks instead of cranking, take note of when it happens. Cold start, hot, after a short trip. That detail helps narrow it down.
