2011 Jeep Patriot – Running Rough and Hard to Start

This Patriot came in running rough and hard to start.

It sounded down on compression in one or more cylinders, so we ran a combustion gas test on the cooling system. It came back positive, and the engine oil was already turning milky from coolant getting into it. A compression test read between 115 and 135 psi, but there was a large amount of water in cylinders 2 and 3 being pushed out during the test.

That all points to a blown head gasket. This one will need either a replacement cylinder head and gasket or a replacement engine. We will talk the owner through the options.

2009 Toyota Hilux, service and check over

This Hilux came in for a routine service and general check over.

As part of the service we replaced the fuel filter and brake fluid. We also found the right front wheel buckled and causing a noticeable vibration. We moved it to the rear for the road test, which settled the vibration, but the wheel really should be replaced.

We also checked the suspension height and found the right front not sitting back at its correct height. That will likely need sorting. Otherwise the vehicle came up satisfactory after the service.

2011 Mitsubishi Triton, Service and Pre-Roadworthy Check

This Triton came in overdue for a service, with a vibration at highway speeds. The owner also wanted the timing belt checked and a list of what would need doing before a roadworthy.

We carried out the service and replaced a blown right front park light and right number plate globe. The timing belt is aged and due for replacement. We also found the front brakes down to around 2mm, a split intercooler hose, a dirty air filter and a cracked A/C belt.

The pre-roadworthy side turned up plenty more. Faded headlights, wheels and tyres sitting outside the guards, split tie rod end boots, a collapsed driver's seat base and a twisted rear seat belt buckle. The airbag light is on with faults logged for both curtain airbags. There is an oil leak around the gearbox area that needs cleaning and reinspection, the rear step side cover is missing, and the sway bar sits very close to the control arm with the vehicle on the ground.

There is a fair bit to get through before this one is roadworthy ready, so we will work through it with the owner and prioritise what matters first.

2004 Holden Commodore, Pre-Roadworthy Inspection

This Commodore came in for a pre-roadworthy inspection to see what needed doing before a Certificate of Roadworthiness could be issued.

There is a fair list up front. The front suspension has worn strut tops, lower control arm ball joints, split sway bar link boots and worn caster arm rear bushes. Both steering rack boots are split and the rear brake rotors are undersize. The handbrake needs adjustment and the battery is not secured properly.

There are also a handful of smaller items. The window tint on all windows is below the acceptable limit and requires removal, the right rear reverse light and right front park light need repair, the headlights need restoring and the torn driver's seat needs repair. The gearbox area needs degreasing and a recheck for leaks, and the right rear shock outer cover needs securing.

Plenty to work through before this one is roadworthy ready, so we will prioritise it with the owner.

2010 Ford Ranger – Timing Belt Replacement

This Ranger came in for a complete timing belt replacement.
We replaced the timing belt kit, including the water pump, and fitted new engine drive belts. The cooling system was vacuum filled with fresh coolant to make sure it was properly filled and free of air. 🔧

The engine light was on prior to work beginning. We scanned the ECU and found fault codes relating to insufficient EGR flow and EGR control performance. These codes indicate a fault with the EGR valve, which will need further diagnosis.

2015 Hyundai Veloster – Front Wheel Bearing

This Veloster came in with a noise from the front end that needed to be checked.
Inspection confirmed the left-hand front wheel bearing had failed. We replaced the wheel bearing and checked the vehicle over to make sure everything was operating as it should. 🔧

2010 Mitsubishi ASX – Loss of Power

This ASX came in after cutting out while driving and struggling to reach 100 km/h.
We found the catalytic converter was blocked, restricting the exhaust flow. Under load, exhaust gases were also being forced past the spring clamp seal at the manifold, and very little exhaust was making it out the rear of the vehicle. Once the exhaust was removed from the manifold, the engine revved freely and smoothly. We replaced the blocked catalytic converter with a second-hand unit and restored the exhaust flow. 🔧

The engine oil was at the minimum mark when the vehicle arrived, this was rectified. All four tyres were also down to their wear indicators and should be replaced.

2016 Subaru Outback – Service and Roadworthy

This Outback came in for a service and Certificate of Roadworthiness inspection.
We carried out the service and replaced a worn tie rod end before completing a wheel alignment. The brake pedal pad was also replaced, and the vehicle was cleaned up ready for collection. 🔧

The front brakes are getting low but are still acceptable under the minimum roadworthy requirements. We also found minor oil leaks from the rocker cover gaskets and right-hand driveshaft seal, along with an ageing drive belt. These items aren't stopping the vehicle from passing the roadworthy, but should be kept in mind for future repairs.

2004 Holden Commodore – Running Rough

This Commodore came in running rough with an engine misfire.
We found the number 6 coil pack wasn't firing, and several of the spark plug leads were also broken. We replaced the faulty coil pack and the complete set of ignition leads. While checking the vehicle over, we also found the EGR base pipe had split and was leaking exhaust fumes into the engine bay, so this was replaced as well. 🔧

The engine was still idling a little rough after the repairs, although it improved during the road test. The spark plugs may have been fouled while the engine was misfiring. We recommended driving the vehicle and returning for another inspection if the rough running continues.

2016 Mercedes-Benz GLA180 – Not Running

This GLA180 was towed in after it stopped running.
We found the battery was completely flat because the charging system wasn't working. Testing showed the alternator had failed, and it was also covered in engine oil from a leak at the turbo oil feed pipe. We fitted a new alternator, fully charged and tested the battery, then road tested the vehicle. The charging system is now working correctly and the road test was satisfactory. 🔧

The turbo oil feed line o-rings were ordered from Mercedes and fitted to rectify the oil leak which caused the alternator to fail in the first place, following this we degreased the engine to bring it back into a reasonable state.
It’s always important to look past the obvious failure into the “why” something has failed.
That’s the difference that ensures a cost effective and lasting repair.
