🕒 Indicator: 3 Seconds or 5 Seconds?
This question is often asked — and yes, VicRoads does give clear rules!

✅ 5 SECONDS — MANDATORY
🔹 When leaving a parked or stationary position
You MUST indicate for at least 5 seconds before moving off — even if there’s no one around.

📘 VicRoads says:

“Activates the appropriate turn indicator for at least 5 seconds before starting to move.” (Section 4.2)

⚠️ Less than 5 seconds = ❌ scoring error
🚨 No signal = ❌ Critical Error – Fail to Signal

✅ 3 SECONDS — MANDATORY
At least 3 seconds of signalling is required before:

🚘 Changing lanes or merging

🔀 Diverging by a car width

🛑 Pulling into the kerb

🅿️ Setting up for a reverse park

🚗 Overtaking parked vehicles

↩️ Turning at intersections

🔄 Entering roundabouts (if practical)

💡 Applies even if no traffic is around — it's about safe habits and test expectations.

❌ When should you cancel the indicator?
✅ After your turn or lane change is fully complete

✅ After all 4 wheels are in the new lane

✅ Once the manoeuvre is fully complete

✋ Cancelling too early confuses others and could lead to a test deduction.

🧠 Common Mistakes That Lead to Test Fails
❌ Flicking the indicator just before moving

❌ Cancelling too early

❌ Forgetting to signal in quiet streets

❌ Only signalling for 1–2 seconds

✅ Best-practice sequence:
Mirrors → Indicator (3s or 5s) → Head Check → Move (if safe)

Congratulations Luke on passing your drive test yesterday.
I hope you are very proud of yourself for getting behind the wheel after the shock from us getting REAR ENDED not long before your drive test. The main thing is we were both OK and Luke passed his test in my beaten up rear end but still drivable car. What a legend to still want to attempt his test after that ordeal. Was a perfect drive. Go Luke. Congratulations! You won't forget this day 😁😁🚘🚘
(We did get checked out at Urgent care just to be sure as it was quite a jolt to our neck)
