We were lucky to have South Aussie with Cosi swing past our site at the Let's Go Caravan and Camping for a quick chat about something close to our hearts — the Kakadu Owners Group.

Caravan Knowledge #1 – Weights Explained

Understanding caravan weights helps ensure your setup is safe, legal, and enjoyable to tow.

Tare
The weight of the caravan as supplied from the manufacturer, with standard inclusions and no personal gear.

ATM (Aggregate Trailer Mass)
The maximum legal weight the caravan is allowed to be when fully loaded.

Payload
The difference between tare and ATM.
This is what you have left for water, food, clothes, tools, chairs, and travel gear.

Ball Weight (Tow Ball Mass)
The downward force the caravan places on the tow ball.
This affects vehicle handling and must stay within both the caravan and tow vehicle limits.

GCM (Gross Combined Mass)
The maximum combined weight of your tow vehicle and caravan together, as set by the vehicle manufacturer
