Yesterday the AV Museum attended the famous Holden Museum in the town of Trafalgar. Our curator Ralph along with volunteers Bill & Dave took our three Holden ambulances (98 Commodore, 92 WB & 72 HQ) for the annual “Cruise 69”, a 69 km drive around the local area.

The drive got underway at 1300hrs, led by the Holden Museum’s Victoria Police VF SS Commodore ( the last VF SS driven by a member of the State Highway Patrol) currently kept at the Museum but still owned by Vic Pol and only able to be driven by a current Vic Pol member.

This was followed by former Highway Patrol (yellow) VK and VL Commodores, then a VS and VT Commodore and a stray EB Falcon regular police cars. Our 3 Ambulance museum cars completed the Emergency Service vehicles. Then followed a stream of Holdens from FX through to the last of the Commodores. A total of 675 Holdens ( and that 1 Ford) took part in the run. Thanks for going everyone.

Today the AV Museum volunteers attended a couple of CFA Fire Stations that were having their annual Open Days. Our CFA colleagues use these open days in the spring to educate the public on the importance of being Fire-ready for the oncoming bushfire season. At Warrandyte CFA, volunteers Nick & Col took the BMW bike and 65 Ford Galaxy to help with the day. While over at The Basin CFA, yours truly brought along the 76 Dodge D5N original MICA ambulance to join up with Eastey’s 1956 Austin fire truck for the public to look over. We appreciate our Firefighter colleagues and all that they do to keep our community safe, thanks everyone.

This week, one of our dedicated volunteers attended Parliament House in Spring St to help celebrate a special occasion. It was the Victorian Parliament Heritage Week and the AV Museum was represented by Lee, who bumped into a couple of familiar faces. Firstly was retired ASV Paramedic Tony Austin (Formerly SO at Ballan) and famous for his leadership in quality & ISO accreditations for ASV. Second was Jenny McCoy from the AOTC where she worked at the Management Development Unit. They were part of the group given a tour of Parliament House by David Davis MLC.

Last weekend the AV Museum attended the Geelong Design festival, celebrating Geelong’s history in designing everyday items (From household items to motor vehicles, especially ambulances). Part of the event was held in what was once the location of the Bodycraft Ambulance builders company that designed many types of ambulances for Victorian ambulance services in the past (One of their design’s was the museum’s 1963 F100). Our volunteers Dave & Lee took along our 1942 GM Chevvie and the 1968 Ford Fairlane, thanks for driving all that way.

Would you know what to do in the event of a medical emergency involving a patient in cardiac arrest?

This month is “Shocktober” where everyone is encouraged to learn CPR, learn how to use an Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) and how to call Triple-Zero. Every day, 21 Victorians experience a cardiac arrest. It happens to people of all ages, often unexpectedly - and more than 75 per cent happen at home. Ambulance Victoria is promoting its annual Shocktober program to encourage the public to learn about “Call-Push-Shock”.

Here at the AV Museum we have an operational AED just in case as we are a public place hosting many visitors. The modern AED is lightweight and simple to use, compared to early model defibrillators from the 1960’s & 70’s. In the photo is a 1970’s Lifepak-3 alongside a smaller more modern AED. The Lifepak-3 was heavy, bulky and complicated to use. Back in the day only qualified physicians were allowed to use them, until MICA paramedics were authorised in their operational use. So please take the chance this month to learn more about Call-Push-Shock.

Today at the AV Museum we had a visit from the Bass Care Age Care Group. One of our dedicated volunteers, Dave, gave the visitors an awesome presentation & tour of the vehicles and exhibits. They came away a group of very satisfied customers and afterwards headed off to the “Baysie Pub” for lunch, thanks for coming 👍

Today the AV Museum entertained a couple of special guests, our CEO Jordan Emery and Executive Assistant Nina Klein paid us a visit to see the museum and all it has to offer. The volunteers, including our curator Ralph and archivist Lee, gave them both a great tour of the vehicles and equipment we have on display. This included Jordan being given a chance to sit in our 1912 Talbot 4CT Ambulance which he noted was slightly more difficult to drive than a modern MB Series-3 Sprinter. Thanks for coming today 👍
