Late in the afternoon yesterday we were called to a truck that broke down soon after departing Melbourne heading north up the Hume. The drivers report was loss of coolant at the front of the truck.
Our client advised us to take a new coolant headder tank.
Upon arrival and testing of the cooling system I found a crack in the coolant headder tank, and at that time I felt so lucky and fortunate that we had the required parts on hand, so I set in to swap the tank over, the job looked pretty easy, 5 bolts, 3 hoses with clips and 1 b**g with a clip…. ( WHAT COULD GO WRONG ).
After taking as much care with the spring loaded clips knowing how violent they are to just fling out into the Abyss, one of the smaller ones dropped down the front of the truck. 🤦🏻‍♂️
I searched high and low using a torch, camera probe and even my phone on record after the camera probe went flat…. After some time I decided to continue with the swap out as the sun was going down and it would soon be dark. I got the old tank out and sat it down on some cardboard on the ground. I decided to remove the large clip from the 1 large hose incase it also fell and placed it through a bolt hole on the old tank which was on the cardboard and then continued to install the new tank.
The new tank installed easy and I thought I’ll take one more look for the small clip, I grabbed the cardboard out from under the old tank which unsettled it and it rolled over. Slid under the truck again and still had no luck finding the small clip….
After a few minutes lost I again decided to stop looking for the clip and continued with plumbing up the hoses that still had clips….. I look for the large clip that I sat on the old tank and it’s gone, it must have flung off when I took the cardboard and it rolled over…. OH NOOOOOOOO 🫨
I searched everywhere, the bitumen was clean in that area because of the amount of traffic that goes by, and it’s just GONE 🤦🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️
By now it’s 10pm and dark. The only option I had was to abandon the breakdown and go back the next day or try to find a way to hold the b**g and the hose on long enough to get the truck back to the depot some 50 km away.
I had some stainless tig wire onboard and decided to try make new clips. There some photos attached to this post.
On these occasions when a few things go wrong we always say, “why me, why now it was such an easy task that now turned into something difficult or testing” and makes me wonder why we don’t appreciate the jobs that actually go to plan and have no obstacles.

Jim, one of our customers has recently bought 4 of these new trailers. He didn’t like all the open area around the wheels which would cause a lot of dirty water spray and stone chips onto the chassis, load binders and more importantly blow water and stones out into traffic nearby. We agreed that plastic guards on each wheel would fix the problem. There are no off the shelf brackets to mount guards to these trailers so we designed a new system that bolts together. We had the parts laser cut and powder coated satin black. They fitted up easy with loop kits and horse hair to aid the water spray suppression. Big thanks to Edward and Annette at Mechanical Designs for drawing up and organising our parts to be laser cut, and A-plus powder coating for their top quality product.
Here are some before and after photos.

Some recent work on 2 water tankers required us to remove the existing under tray diesel hose reels and re-mount new ones above the tray, plumb the new hose reels to the existing original tank and high flow pump and wire in a smart fill system that allows the customer to see where and how much diesel is being dispensed into other plant machines. We also designed and had manufactured a new smaller diesel tank for the truck to run off and mounted it rearward of the original tank. Big shout out to the team at A-FLO in hoppers crossing for inviting us into this project and of coarse supply of their products. Here are some before and after pictures

A recent job last week was to remove this 250mm seized pin from a machine, we were successful in drilling a 19mm hole through the centre of the pin to allow the oxy to heat the whole pin, then welded a nut in the bottom to attach our 20 tonne puller. It took an hour and a half of heating before the pin started to move with the full 20 tonne applied by the puller. (More videos in comments)

One of our good customers needed this custom stainless steel exhaust TIG welded. A lot of work was done by the customer to ensure the exhaust curved away from other parts that could be damaged by heat emitted by the exhaust.

Here is a repair to a suspension hanger where the pivot bolt had loosened and worked against the hanger. A new hanger was unavailable so with some help of our local parts supplier we were able to retro fit this hanger repair kit that was specially made for these types of repairs.

The truck we helped to recover from Eucla earlier on in the year had this bull bar which was bent in some areas. It made the truck look a bit ugly and is not needed for city driving. It needed to be removed. To save cost of a new bumper, paint and mounts we disassembled the upper and lower posts from the bull bar, made new mounting points that were previously damaged and polished the original bar section, the other advantage of this is the extra protection against small accidents that would normally destroy a standard bumper.

This client needed a cast alloy part repaired. It had several cracks and was oil soaked. We ground out the cracks and TIG welded them up. We then die grinded the curves and profiles back to its original shape, and finally had the part linished flat.
This repair saved our customer approximately $2000 and over 3 weeks waiting time for a new part to arrive from overseas.

In July we were busy assembling temporary hand rails as safety precaution on the vehicle. This design allows for the hand rails to be disassembled when loads are needed to be unloaded via forklifts or in locations where there are high restrictions; such as trees or powerlines, when using the vehicles crane.

August saw us undertake a repair of a different kind.
This forklift ramp needed a complete overhaul.
We stripped away all the bent and broken pieces, then built a sturdy structure under the start of the ramp. We also changed the initial incline to prevent forklift masts colliding with the ramp on entry.
We re-laid heavy checker plate flooring and mezzanine sheet to give forklifts better traction.
The job was completed over the course of 3 weekends.
