Late in the afternoon yesterday we were called to a truck that broke down soon after departing Melbourne heading north up the Hume. The drivers report was loss of coolant at the front of the truck.
Our client advised us to take a new coolant headder tank.
Upon arrival and testing of the cooling system I found a crack in the coolant headder tank, and at that time I felt so lucky and fortunate that we had the required parts on hand, so I set in to swap the tank over, the job looked pretty easy, 5 bolts, 3 hoses with clips and 1 b**g with a clip…. ( WHAT COULD GO WRONG ).
After taking as much care with the spring loaded clips knowing how violent they are to just fling out into the Abyss, one of the smaller ones dropped down the front of the truck. 🤦🏻♂️
I searched high and low using a torch, camera probe and even my phone on record after the camera probe went flat…. After some time I decided to continue with the swap out as the sun was going down and it would soon be dark. I got the old tank out and sat it down on some cardboard on the ground. I decided to remove the large clip from the 1 large hose incase it also fell and placed it through a bolt hole on the old tank which was on the cardboard and then continued to install the new tank.
The new tank installed easy and I thought I’ll take one more look for the small clip, I grabbed the cardboard out from under the old tank which unsettled it and it rolled over. Slid under the truck again and still had no luck finding the small clip….
After a few minutes lost I again decided to stop looking for the clip and continued with plumbing up the hoses that still had clips….. I look for the large clip that I sat on the old tank and it’s gone, it must have flung off when I took the cardboard and it rolled over…. OH NOOOOOOOO 🫨
I searched everywhere, the bitumen was clean in that area because of the amount of traffic that goes by, and it’s just GONE 🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️
By now it’s 10pm and dark. The only option I had was to abandon the breakdown and go back the next day or try to find a way to hold the b**g and the hose on long enough to get the truck back to the depot some 50 km away.
I had some stainless tig wire onboard and decided to try make new clips. There some photos attached to this post.
On these occasions when a few things go wrong we always say, “why me, why now it was such an easy task that now turned into something difficult or testing” and makes me wonder why we don’t appreciate the jobs that actually go to plan and have no obstacles.
